So apparently, Mugglecockles only sealed the background magic that used to permeate the world, but the descendants of mages retain their innate magic, which is why they can still do things like memory wiping or the fire-and-ice spell. However, using one's innate magic shortens one's life span, as does piloting an Armanox, especially when one uses powerful abilities or pushes beyond one's limits like Anna did. Abusing magic also takes a toll on one's sanity, which is presumably what Nene's mom warned them about.

Another theory. Most of the world's magic was indeed sealed like we were told, but there was still magic that the mages possessed naturally and gave to their children. To eliminate that magic Magiaconatus set up Granbelm with a promise to make the winner a full mage while loser families got weaker with each generation thus gradually reducing the amount of magic in the world. Except it's rigged and Suishou is the coconut's avatar and the designated winner, hence her "crystal" name and remarks hinting at her not being human. In the past Manko still managed to win due to her immense talent except she didn't get the prize but instead got her memories erased and a new fake identity and family. This time she will gattai with Chinko and beat Suishou for good winning properly.

That fight was actually pretty bad. It wasn't good because it was a good fight. It was good because of Anna.
The fights in Granbelm are bad because a good fight requires some cleverness, escalation, tension, emotion, and danger. The problem is that in that fight, all of that is coming from Anna who is trying so hard and giving us an amazing spectacle and Ernesta practically yawns through it dodging everything without trying. It's like watching a Steven Seagal movie where the bad guy is flipping around doing ten forms of kung fu and Seagal breaks their arm and moves on. If for even 1 second Anna had made Ernesta feel some actual fear it would have been a great fight because it would have wiped the boredom off her face for once. Instead it's like watching somebody kick a baby.
The same goes for Manko's fight against Nenene. Nene is using all these clever tactics and then just when she's cornered she flips it around and starts using mecha kung fu, and it's awesome. But then Manko retard plot armors straight through it. Completely hopeless fights are not exciting to watch.
Hopefully it gets better but they've already revealed that Manko is literally three times stronger than the strongest people
