This. It's like people forget about Roshi's feat in the ToP. Merus is impressive because he actually knows martial arts and has serious skill in it, which is something that normally doesn't happen with the people Goku fights. Shitren was just really strong, his fighting technique was next to nothing. Same with pretty much every antagonist Goku has fought. It's also why Goku Black/Merged Zamasu were so threatening. Zamasu trained his technique, Goku Black was Goku himself, and MZ combined them.

My argument is that it is all bullshit. This is from the guy that didn't have the foresight to call SSG Saiyan God and SSGSS Super Saiyan God. The anime implied that Goku can't go SSG without the ritual by having Vegeta refuse the ritual to catch up. Then it is decided that Goku can activate SSG at will because the manga.

Everything is there to make him an interesting foil for Goku and even a suitable final antagonist. In just about every way imaginable, he and Goku represent contradictions--not only to each other, but between different aspects of their own motivations as well--and those contradictions are ones relevant to the core of the series.
Jiren is all selfless justice, compared to all-avarice Goku, but the pursuit of that idea of justice manifests in a wish that would have, for its selfishness, left all the universes destroyed. Meanwhile, Goku is so narrow-mindedly focused on his own pursuits that any personal gains not related to them are to be put to use for others without a second thought. Goku doesn't claim to fight for others, while Jiren very much does, yet Goku continuously draws others toward them and morally betters them while Jiren pushes them away. Goku relies on finding and utilizing those stronger than him while Jiren's past experiences leave him denying the same thought. That Goku's motivation is growth for its own sake rather than growth for a separate purpose is inconceivable to Jiren. On the other hand, Goku has friends and a living master, but he doesn't have what he desires most- Jiren's GoD-surpassing power.
They're good foils, and the ways in which they're foils tie into everything the series does with its themes of selfishness and forging interpersonal bonds. And that comes into play in the outcome of this arc as a stand-alone story, too, with both Freeza and Android #17's changes due to their interactions with Goku factoring centrally into its end.
But all of that comes across terribly. More so in the anime, where any hints of the elements I brought up are saved for the final moments of the arc. The manga did better, but not by that much. He's okay there, but still well below potential.

and yes, i'm pretty sure these are the exact 3 scenes that were used to justify the idea of gohan having "hidden potential". I think it made more sense to focus on Gohan's want to protect his friends, and realizing he was indeed always a background character that could never help when he was needed the most, leading to his friends dying, and a desire to not let that happen anymore. 16's death being the trigger for that was retarded though since he barely even knew 16, so it would have made more sense if someone closer was the trigger, like if Gohan didn't ascend until Goku sacrificed himself for Cell's self-destruction. It's hard to come up with a scenario where that would have happened though, like what could have pushed Cell to make that last-ditch effort detonation if he weren't already facing SS2 Gohan? If Cell got his shit beaten by SS1 Gohan to trigger it, then the iconic struggle scene of SS2 Gohan barely matching Cell's kamehameha wouldn't have really happened.

THEN Goku teleports Cell to King Kai's planet and dies, Cell comes back powered up and revived, then creates his Cell Jr's to start fighting the z-force. i'm saying that the official multiplier for SS4 was 4000x the baseform. Powerlevels are a meassurement for strength, like meters are for distance. Travelling 100 meters is twice as far as travelling 50 meters. Similar SS1 is 50x baseform or SS1 is 3 million x 50 = 150 million.
I expained how storng SS! is, once by showing it in powerlevels and once without mentioning power levels at all.
