Stay Night as the introduction to it all is exceedingly kuso. I'm not sure I would have even called it good by the standards of it's creation date.
The franchise basically boils down to Pokemon Battle Royale, and there are a ton of lifted ideas and character designs from other anime, while original designs are not specifically impressive and lack creativity, like most of the servants wearing one-color-tracksuits, while Rin is a palette swap of asuka langley from evangelion.
I'm sure it'd be appealing to 12 year olds but not much else.

The anime is shit but the the manga is ok.
The first part always reminds me a lot of old TM since it was just meant to be a joke about one line Illya says in FHA. Add in the numerous FSN fanservice and it's a decent experience. The manga has gotten worse with each part though, even if I respect the author for trying to convert his gag series into something more serious. At least an attempt was made.
