I watched all twelve episodes hoping it would pick up. I thought maybe there would be good battles - there weren't, it defaulted to "magic loli god powers trump numbers and strategy" every time. I thought maybe there'd be good character development, there wasn't really. It feels like it's meant to be cool, in the same way shounen feels like it's meant to be cool.

Maybe I'm misplacing the boundary between shounen and seinen. I would file something like this or Death Note as shounen, just shounen for edgy lateish-teens, but maybe that's just me not wanting to acknowledge them. I think of Berserk or Initial D or something like that when I think of seinen but I guess you can't have private definitions of these things.

In any case, regardless of how to categorise it, I thought it didn't deliver on any of the potential it looked on the surface like it might have. It felt like it was geared to reel in teenagers who find anything dark and provocative impressive.

Translation seems good to me. There's only some incredibly niche mistakes that were caused by the super obscure shit Carlo talks about that got fixed later for the manga TL, but the TL of the LN always seemed like it maintained both the authors voice and the japanese eccentricities to me, without for example mistaking the stating of one's own name due to Japanese grammar for the disassociative references to Tanya seperate from the mental "self" of the MC during the very early volumes and the gradual dissipation of that.

Not that user, but the LN is very different from the anime.
If you watch the anime it feels like Tanya is just crazy and edgy, because you don't really get to see her thought processes, and because a greater emphasis is put on action.
In the LN Tanya seems much more cold and calculating, but also more relatable because she is constantly justifying her actions to herself.

As an example, in episode two of the anime Tanya has to fend of an entire company of enemies until reinforcements arrive.
She then snaps, and enters a desperate dogfight while declaring her desire to fight.
The anime is missing the part where Tanya reasons that if she has to follow such terrible orders she might as well make the most out of it and act like a good patriot to score points with the higher-ups.
But because Tanya then also takes a large dose of amphetamines in preparation for combat her patriotic speech ends up as deranged rambling.

Also, a big theme of the LN is that characters are acting based on imperfect information.
Different characters can have very different interpretations of events because they only see a part of the picture.

The official English translation is well written.
I personally think it's sometimes a little hard to follow, but since English is not my first language I don't know how difficult it would be for a native speaker.

I don't know if its the meth at that point yet, the Pervitin specifically is only brought up later, though there's also some magical doping involved. Though she also makes the point that mages can quarantine their rational thinking from the effects of drugs to a degree.
