As a teenager, I simply enjoyed the psychedelic imagery. Now, many years later I know more about the original author of the books, and when I watch it it's a melancholic feeling. One of my former friends also liked to watch it, despite not being much into anime. So it also holds a kind of sentimental value for me with that.
