What are your feelings towards this studio?

too bad the mahou shoujo genre will never have universal appeal. There's a good reason why the only show of the genre that had recognition in recent history is essentially a parody of it.

They've made some incredible shows, but they've also made alot of terribly animated garbage.

I feel the same way about them I do about Sega. They suck, but I'm still a diehard fan of a lot of their properties (in this case precure and kamen rider are the main ones) so it's kinda a battered housewife syndrome thing going on.

Toei's main problem is insisting on producing a shit ton of different series in a small amount of time so they always end up outsourcing to newbies with few to no experience. Which would not be that bad if the shittiest animators were hired only for less known series, but when you announce a revival of the most famous anime-related cultural icon and pic related is what you have to show, don't complain when people say you have a reverse midas touch.

Precure killing their streak of good anime for little girls was the final nail in their coffin. Robot Girls Z is the only good anime they made since then.

Toei still has to try with Precure once in a while. It was shit for years so they decided to remake Doremi Sharp with Hugtto. A lengthy Emiruru fan pandering sequence in the middle of their nostalgia pandering managed to please viewers.

factually wrong, DBS wasn't made by newbies or anything.
It's FujiTV that wanted to bank on the Fukkatsu no F hype and requested a new series on a short notice
The problem with Toei is the exact opposite, when they make a huge amount of shows, they usually try to deal with it only using their internal staff without outsourcing even though outsourcing could've helped them a lot like it did with other rushed shows from different studios.
Also, they've been doing only 3 shows for a while now, which is actually much lower than what used to be their standard, so they don't even go through the understaffing problem nowadays.

They've been currently delivering excellent work for their productions now. Granted, they work on less TV series and more movies now, but you gotta admit they upped their game. All three TV productions (One Piece, Precure, and Gegege no Kitaro) look unironically amazing, and their upcoming movies also look promising.

They’re a powerhouse of a studio with a long history. Made a lot of formulaic shows, but a lot of gems as well. Lots of talented people in the industry got their start here.

On a personal level, I love their anime for girls, from the majokko shows to their 90s shoujo series to Doremi to Precure. Ashita no Nadja will always have a special place in my heart too,

It's kinda incredible what they can do when a different branch takes care of some things to let animators just animate. The jump of quality of DBS from the first arcs to the ToP was ridiculous. Not that ToP was a masterpiece of animation but it improved so much just because they were being backed up directly by a branch of Shueisha

They really didn't pull through for me and made me drop one piece midway through the doflamingo arc.

The animation was fucking dogshit in terms of standards and the pacing didn't do it any favors. They really should have opted for a more polished roundabout way and took some time, I feel like more people would have been down for that instead of a rushed and shitty looking span of episodes.

I don't think I've ever been as disappointed as I was the day I found out they weren't doing any more .5's after the movie came out

Zi-O's a fun enough show as it is but those were easily the highlight

It's a cynical lying sabotaging greedy studio less about art and more about making money. It believes in vertical integration and may also control the IP management of property and its merchandise marketing.

== One Piece ==
Anime is full of filler and even dead air is snuck in by making cuts or transitions take a fraction longer than needed. There can be two starting opening sequences of full length instead of the normal 90 seconds that other anime shows get. The ending length wastes more time too. This makes purchasing of video episodes a rotten deal. Some really bad episodes have as little as 20% new material although 40% is typical.

== Sailor Moon ==
Because Toei had "Right of First Refusal" with Naeko Takeuchi, she was forced to go to Toei who didn't want a sailor moon reboot as it already had Pretty Cure and control of its marketing sales. Sailor Moon didn't give them merchandising control. So they deliberately did a poor job by making not a reboot but a remake that didn't even have much modern animation quality. Toei also refused to allow it to air on TV so it was online viewing only for release. Toei did what it could to legally sabotage the reboot without being accused of malfeasance.

Also, Toei is no Kyoani nor does it pay like Kyoani. When making movies that had external investors, it overinflated the costs and ripped them off. A movie was stated to cost about 100M usa dollars to make and in the end cost only $14M after auditors rechecked. But by then, a ton of money had disappeared. Can't sue Toei because they are the contractor hired by the LLC. ha ha ha Toei wins aga
