Their normal frames of reference, BNHA, DBZ, and the first season of SnK, are lacking the emotional weight Yaiba carries with it. I don't consider that a knock against of the series referenced. They're all good in their own ways.

Maybe I’m just being overly negative. It just seemed like “another shounen” to me. I just didn’t get why it’s so much more widely liked than something like Enen no Shouboutai which is also airing this season.

Fire Force is pretty damn popular outside of Yea Forums. They're both fun shounen series with high production values and a lot of hype around them - it makes sense that they're popular. I don't really know why Yea Forums hates Fire Force, seeing as I've only watched the first episode. I think it has something to do with Shinra's smile being "cringe"?

Based for the most part but Fire Force isn't that bad. It's not "special" in the same way that KnY and BNHA are but it's well executed and has a likable cast. Nothing wrong with a little ecchi, though it wouldn't suit most series.

To be fair I haven't seen beyond episode 1 of Fire Force due to a lack of time, so I'm going to reserve judgment.

As for Zenitsu, I can't say I fully disagree but I don't really find him annoying to the point of actually ruining my enjoyment of the show. I think his behavior keeps flipping between the endearing kind of annoying and the kind that isn't endearing at all, leaving me ultimately neutral. I actually like the secret badass trope though, cliche though it is. Of course I can't blame you if you just aren't a fan of that trope.

Pretty pictures and easy to understand plot (i.e. barely anything going on beyond "fight the demons"). It's the anime equivalent of junk food.

Fire force has some interesting ideas and some pretty good animation, but the story gets weaker as it goes along, the fights get much worse, the dialogue is pretty awkward, and the shot to shot direction/cinematography is janky as hell. Here's some examples:

>Fights
There's a fight where the sword guy just dicks around for 7 minutes and then one shots his enemy after realizing he was holding his sword wrong the whole time.
One episode later MC is presented with a powerful enemy that uses a technique he can't beat, and he just beats it without changing his strategy at all.

>Story
After MC beats the person above with sheer will power or whatever the fuck she falls in love with him instantly and just stops being evil. She used to be a psychopath who enjoyed stepping on people and dissecting live creatures and now she's just good because she lost a 10 minute fight.

>Dialogue
I don't really feel like quoting the show, but just know that MC and his rival just scream about how they're a hero/knight every few minutes. It's fucking annoying.

>Cinematography/Directing
The whole show has a surreal kind of pulled back quality that doesn't work at all with the emotional fun shonen story. I don't know how to describe it very well, but characters and things move randomly in between shots in ways that make no sense and the "camera" location make everything feel detached.

Zenitsu is actually incredibly popular despite being one of the worst anime character written in the last 10 years.

Maybe people like him because he matures? I haven't read the manga but it seems like that's where it's heading.

It's can't just be the iajutsu since there's one in literally every anime with swords, I just don't understand how somebody who screeches for 90% of his screen time could possibly be popular, it's like if Black Clover was actually as popular as all the advertising hyped it up to be.

I like Black Clover. Asta is endearing, even in the anime - though it failed on several other fronts. I don't know how I feel about Zenitsu seeing as I'm still behind by half of what's out. I suspect he won't be as endearing but it takes a lot to make me hate a show and a lot to make me love it - I skew toward neutrality if I don't have something to latch onto.

It was pretty hyped up before that, just not to the point of every other streamer screaming about it. The soundtrack kicks ass and is what made me feel it was special right away, so there's more than just sakuga. It also does a lot with the art - specifically line thicknesses - and while I think some of the CG is weak the backgrounds and environments are generally gorgeous.

Someone dies on episode one. That's enough to get normalfags attention.

Good animation always makes things easy to see and increases acceptance the same way good looking people.

Take Maid Dragon for example, no one would have watched that crap if wasn't for the animation. Good looking things are always appealing.

Zenitsu is a good guy at heart. He's a coward but he knows when to step up. I'd also bet many people liked his backstory. Also he gets better.

He really, literally doesn't. He only "steps up" when he falls unconscious. The only time he's ever been conscious and not screaming, crying, or whining is when he was dying of spider poison and he couldn't do anything at all.

But user, it's the best way to use superior nippon steel. I unironically love it no matter how overused it is. Zenitsu less so - I don't outright hate him but the mangaka can't consistently nail making an annoying character endearing, so sometimes I like having him around and others I want to punch him in the face.
