What else did you expect from the dullest franchise in the history of shonen franchises? Seriously each episode following the boy hero and his pals from U.A. High School as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of animation, all to make the supernatural mundane, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Kohei Horikoshi vetoed the idea of Hiroaki Miyamoto directing the series; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody? Just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his manga. The My Hero Academia series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Hunter x Hunter series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Horikoshi's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of My Hero Academia by the same Toriyama. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading MHA at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Dragon Ball Z." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "MHA" you are, in fact, trained to read Dragon Ball Z.

MHA has never really coasted on its direction but Umakoshi is very good at what he does and he's out to do some Precure book. S3 was very good/consistent animation-wise and pacing-wise because of a great schedule but was remarkably sakuga-free outside of 2 really short yutapon cuts and United States of Smash- mostly due to many of the better key animators focusing on the movie. S4 really could've used a more intense focus because it's so action-heavy but now they're doing another movie so it could be the same thing all over unless Bones doesn't have a lot of irons in the fire.

The movie desu I'm not really jazzed about. Movie 1 I was fine with being a "here's a brand new completely cut-from-whole-cloth setting that doesn't interact with the main setting at all so you can see all your favorite characters style on a movie-only badguy group" fillerfest; I think Hori had the right idea with the movie being a place to do a thing you'd like to see but can't see in the main series (i.e. All Might + Deku combo attack). But the second movie is looking like THE EXACT SAME FUCKING THING, only he was able to foreshadow Movie Mook #2 in the manga. Now was the time to do something really different like One Piece did with the sixth movie.

So if both the season+movie are wet farts and don't trigger a big backlog buyout I could see S5 not happening and that being about that for MHA maintaining its presence or growth.

Really this manga didn't gain mass popularity (atleast in The West and on Yea Forums) until the 1st season of the Anime. Mob got so much love animation wise because the original material was crude enough that you could do basically whatever you wanted with it and still be "on model"- also ONE really is legit talented at paneling and action so between being able to go hog wild and having solid source material Mob ended up looking great. One of MHA's strengths is in its strong character design and visual style so you have to put more effort in to making it look right- that's why it kinda hurts that Umakoshi is out for this season because his real specialty is adapting character designs. Umakoshi actually talks about how difficult it was in his interview with Hori because his designs are really good and thus require a lot of effort to drop lines from while making them look distinct/on-model and not Jitsu-wa'd.

Mob didn't take any staff from MHA though, so anyone who says that it did is wrong. It had its own staff so its production won't affect MHA's. Bones is very good at scheduling which is what keeps a series looking consistent. See Bort and Black Clover for examples of what bad scheduling does- basically groups of really not good looking episodes punctuated by the schedule working out and some good staff being able to crank something nice out for 1-2. The least animation-heavy episode of MHA really don't ever look like total off-model, sparsely animated crap because Bones doesn't fuck their schedules up.

Haikyuu still sells really well but yeah you're right about Neverland and Bokuben's animes not really managing to catch fire. Neverland got a bigger pop from the Ame Talk mention than from its anime.

Explosive impact.

You can charge parts of your body with energy which shows visibly like heat (red, red-white, white, blue), and it's only released on actual impact- it can't be triggered mentally. Also it feels like it flows from your gut (basically think like where eastern martial arts think your ki center is) and you "fill" your limbs with it- it's difficult to keep it in specific spots that aren't your fists/feet. Also, part of the energy in the explosion neutralizes the recoil YOU experience so it can't be used for traversal or speed boosts and this can't be switched off. So for example: you charge your fist up and punch someone- if it's a good solid hit it produces an explosion at the point of impact in addition to the impact from the punch and you don't experience any of the recoil. If your hit is shallow/glancing, you get basically a useless tiny explosion or spark.

This can be used defensively too since it's triggered by impact period- if someone say, punches you and you block with a charged part of your body- their impact is cancelled out and they get hit with an explosion; but it does discharge the energy so a followup hit WILL hit you if you can't charge again fast enough. Large enough impacts will cut straight through your charge- even if it does lessen the impact.

Why is the OVERHAUL ARC BAD. Use objective criticism. People always say the MHA arcs are bad then leave, rarely making a case the is not subjective and hate fueled.

My problem with it isn't with the arc as a whole, but rather everything after Deku bursting through the wall to fight Overhaul.
Where beforehand, every fight was either interesting and creative, or had character development in it, Deku vs. Overhaul was not.
There's no strategy involved. There's nothing particularly creative. It's just two guys trying to one-up each other with their power levels. Overhaul is a new character who appears and disappears in this arc, and Deku doesn't change at all.
And then you have the bullshit with Nighteye's quirk. Before this point, Deku was only special because All Might chose him to inherit OfA. But now he's literally the chosen one who can twist fate with sheer willpower. Nighteye never had to foresee Deku dying. It comes across as cheap drama because we know Deku can't actually die.
And let's not even get started on the panel composition. Hori is very bad when it comes to panel clutter, which really comes out when pebbles are flying everywhere, and is even worse at conveying combat between two opponents of drastically different size, making the kaiju Overhaul segments borderline unreadable at times.
Add the fact that the chapters were shorter than usual and that Hori was taking frequent breaks because the arc was making him depressed, and it's clear why the arc is so hated.

The point of the fight was to be a spectacle. Not all fights needed to be creative. It demonstrated what deku would be like when 100% of the quirk was mastered.
