Sometimes the best friend character is introduced part way into the story.

Crow wasn't introduced until Episode 29.
Johan wasn't introduced until Episode 106.

Crow is the Jounouchi of 5D's, and Soulburner is the Jounouchi of VRAINS.
Not saying that it has to be 1:1, but it is obvious that certain tropes are played out a lot in this series.
1) Protagonist and/or partner - shifts between warm and cold personalities, or has a partner that functions as the other of the two (protagonist being emotional while partner is cold, or vice versa). have a strong connection bonded together by fate.
2) Female lead - has emotional issues, wanting to connect to a loved one that goes largely unmet, hard or soft depending on situation, can be played for laughs or depicted seriously
3) Rival - serious, cold-hearted, calculating, soft sport for loved ones. dismisses the best friend but grudgingly respects protagonist.
4) Best friend - emotional, hyperactive, intense, passionate, loyal, protective of the protagonist, has grudge against rival
5) Little kid - sometimes looks up to protagonist (and occasionally the rival), sometimes gets into spat with the best friend, impressionable, super hyperactive, and super annoying but occasionally shows a mature side
6) Older duelist - Usually played for laughs and mostly depicted as comic relief
7) Secondary rival - Not as important as the main rival and largely phased out by the time the first season ends.
8) Antagonist - Wants to change the world, megalomaniac, desires control and more power, usually connected with main plot

Crow and Jounouchi both fit into the best friend mold, as does Soulburner. They have different backstories and slightly different personalities, but they are all part of that archetype. The most different of the "best friend" trope is probably either Shark from Zexal, or Johan from GX.

DM and 5Ds have like 2 or 3 decent females
VRAINS is the only series where the main girl is the worst
even the fucking the background characters are better looking than the known female characters
