No unironically he's not a bad person at all.
he's only human
No. He is a victim of life and people need to try to understand him if they want to get what the show is about.
In the way most 14 year olds are
No, but he's "Not Good enough"
>14 year old manipulated into being a soldier.
I'm gonna be pretty controversial and say he's not a bad person
but then again Mark 10:18
He is neither good nor bad he was just living
Shinji doesn't deserve the hate he gets.
Try being fucking 14, abandoned, & forced to fight & save humanity.
People hating on him act like they could do better when they were 14 in that scenario.
Yes, he is. When I was his age, I had the feeling that I needed to do what was just regardless. If I needed to die to protect my family, I would. If I needed to die to make a statement, I would. That's how I felt when I was his age. If my father made me pilot an Eva, I would do it. I would swallow my feelings because in the end all that matters is justice.
Shinji is a little wimp who thinks his emotions are worth more than the lives of others. He is a bad person.
This, the average 14yo is a borderline psychopath piece of shit. If anything shinji seemed mature far beyond his age.
He's an adolescent boy who doesn't think he should be trusted with the job being asked of him, does it anyway out of some apparent sense of diligence that nobody at all ever taught to him, until it grinds him down and he starts lashing out.
This. The emotional baggage he carries from his abandonment cripples him as a person; it's exactly not his fault but in all practical sense that hardly matters. He's not bad, just a scared kid thrown into a fight against forces he barely comprehends with the weight of the world on his shoulders and everyone calling him a faggot for not accomplishing the impossible at every step on his first try.
He's Jesus Christ
only for letting himself down
I never understood why so much emphasis was put on WHY DO YOU PILOT THE EVA?
That's a stupid question because the reason is: he's the only one that can pilot that particular robot, and if nobody pilots it than everybody on Earth, including him, is fucked.
Because text and subtext are two different things. The story is that giant cyborg machines are fighting angels that try to destroy humanity. But what the story is about is Shinji learning to love himself and accept human nature. That's why End of Evangelion stops at that particular moment, and not after humanity is rebuild or whatever - because the former is Shinji's emotional climax, the latter does not really matter for what the story is about.
He did fap by using a half-naked comatose girl. That is pretty fucked up.
It's the lowest of the low.
Because this series prioritizes drama over logic.
That's tame as fuck. At least he didn't rape her.
That would be legit if he could say that and sound like he meant it. It would be pretty concerning to count on someone for this and they can't really articulate a reason for doing it or what they want.
>That's a stupid question because the reason is: he's the only one that can pilot that particular robot
Which is irrelevant really, the entire class (or even school) was full of potential candidates.
Then why weren't they all on standby or asked to do training?
Only Shinji could pilot Unit-01 because of his mother.
Because
They are practically on standby. Remember how quick Touji got roped into piloting 03?
True. But doesn't really matter.
Person: no
Character: yes
Also: useless, annoying, cringe, gay, whiney, retarded, dad complex, necrophiliac masturbator...
Shinji was never bad to begin with
He's just a teen who was thrown into the world of adults by force
No
got any more screenshots?
I wish Fuyutsuki would get more focus. I think he's one of the most evil characters in the show.
You think he's evil? I see him more as neutral good or chaotic good.
After all he's pretty much in cahoots with Gendo
Yeah all that is nice faggot but once you're actually in those situations things change
Yeah I do. Being in cahoots with Gendo is the reason why I see him as evil.
>the entire class (or even school)
What was even the point of the school? Only 3 other classmates mattered and they were unceremoniously written out after having contributed almost nothing, along with the entire concept of the kids going to school. Kaoru for some reason wore the school uniform even though the school was gone.
Well in this case I tend to see Gendo and SEELE as the real "evil" characters in the anime
Fuyutsuki never really came off as evil in my book, he's more like a stern commanding officer. He also went out to discover the truth and only joined Gehrin to not be killed for discovering the truth. Plus he's one of the more caring characters in the anime.
They were all eva candidates, but they didn't know that
A far better 14-year old than I was
>They were all eva candidates, but they didn't know that
Yeah, but that ended up being irrelevant to the plot is my point. If you wrote the whole school out of the show, barely anything would change.
Maybe Im just too much of a round eye but I always read it as him being emotionally black mailed. He's free to choose to do what he wants, but if he runs away from scary monster fights he's a coward and if he agrees to it he's basically everyone's bitch. There is no winning for him in the eyes of others.
>What was even the point of the school?
General education for the pilots. Who wants a pilot that can't read?
> Only 3 other classmates mattered and they were unceremoniously written out after having contributed almost nothing
I don't know. Touji mattered with his angel 03 unit. It also gave the main characters some friends outside of "work" which helped to flesh out the theme of the show, i.e. human relationships. Hikaru's relationship with Asuka degrades heavily over the course of the show, for example. Shinji can't really click with Keisuke and his weird hobbies. I think it's important.
Also, the script/story of the show changed massively after episode 16, due to budget constraints. Which is why there's more psychedlic stuff in it than before. Kaworu was supposed to be a transfer student with a magical cat for exampel. All of that changed once the budget hit 0, Anno went crazy and the staff as well.
Dude I love NGE but sometimes the writing is just not there.
Anno can be a hack a lot of the time
Would that bridge work in real life? I've never seen one without cables on both sides.
There is an actual bridge that looks like that in Seville, Spain
>General education for the pilots. Who wants a pilot that can't read?
Wouldn't it make more sense to homeschool them on the base so that they can be on standby 24/7? That way, they don't have to waste time waiting for the pilots to get to the base, and there is less danger to the pilots. Remember how Touji beat up Shinji because his Eva antics destroyed his home? What if other people thought the same thing?
Gendo and his plan are necessary to screwing Seele, who would recycle mankind if not opposed, then both Gendo and Seele are necessary to Nerv and defeating Angels, which would otherwise exterminate mankind. Most evil that Fuyutsuki does is the manga version where Yui entrusted him to fill Gendo in on her scenario after she went, and he didn't because he liked watching Gendo twist.
Like I said, the script changed heavily in the latter half of the show. The information about the school/class being all candidates is something we learn very very late.
Who knows what the original plan and reasoning for the school was.
Was there any other major changes due to the constraints?
I mean, asuka IS pretty hot...
What do you think happens when a 14 year old sees tits?
From what I understand, everything up from 16 does not follow the original script.
>starting with episode 16, the show changed drastically, focusing on the characters and discarding the grand narrative concerning salvation for a narrative focusing on the individual characters. This change coincided with Anno's development of an interest in psychology after a friend lent him a book on mental illness. This focus culminated in a psychoanalysis of the characters in the two final episodes. The production ran so close to the airing deadline that the completed scenes used in the preview of the twenty-fifth episode had to be redesigned to work with the new ending. These episodes feature heavy use of abstract animation, flashbacks, simple line drawings, photographs and fixed image scenes with voice-over dialogue. Some critics speculated that these unconventional animation choices resulted from budget cuts, but Toshio Okada stated that they were the result of the ending being decided only three months before airing

Another interesting tidbit
>Episode 16 marked a distinct shift that would characterize the second half of Evangelion as being more psychological than action or adventure.[15] This change in emphasis was partly due to the development of the story, but also partly because by this point, production had begun running out of funding and failing to meet the schedule; this collapse has been identified by at least one Gainax employee as the impetus for Evangelion's turn into metafiction:
>I didn't mind it. The schedule was an utter disaster and the number of cels plummeted, so there were some places where unfortunately the quality suffered. However, the tension of the staff as we all became more desperate and frenzied certainly showed up in the film … About the time that the production system was completely falling apart, there were some opinions to the effect that, "If we can't do satisfactory work, then what's the point of continuing?" However, I didn't feel that way. My opinion was, "Why don't we show them the entire process including our breakdown."[16]
God truly does work in mysterious ways, because despite all the changes it still managed to turn out so good.
It turned out better than what we know of the original ideas, I'd say. Shoving a magical talking cat 20 episodes into a show was rightly discarded.
>Shoving a magical talking cat 20 episodes into a show was rightly discarded
No fucking way. Was it apart of a mental breakdown or something?
No, he's just a faggot
And I'm glad it did, because if it wasn't for Eva we wouldn't have most of the gems that came out in the late 90s and onward.
It was part of the original script. The climax was also gonna be 12 angels against the evas and I think there was no human instrumentality either.
Repeating myself again, I sincerely think that the Eva we got is far better than the original script

>In early designs, Kaworu was depicted as a school boy with a pet cat who could switch to an "Angel form".[17] In vol. 9 of the manga, one of Sadamoto's artworks is a portrayal of Kaworu dressed in black and holding a black cat.[16] This is sardonically referenced in the manga as Kaworu kills a stray cat when he meets Shinji. There is also an official figure of him holding a cat.
Sadly the link to the reference is down and I can't find a pic.
Kinda unfair to give NGE all the glory when Nadia was the reason for Anno's depression, and thus NGE.
He goes to the nearest bathroom to fap. He doesn't use the comatose girl's hand to fap on her comatose body.
? He didn't use her hand. He didn't even touch her.
She rolled over in the bed, her tits became visible, he came on his own hand.
A real human being and a real hero
Nobody is a hero in Eva
the closest we get is Yui when she's had enough of SEELE or the angel's shit
Kaji comes close.
Oh snap you're right
And Kaji is one of the few characters to be 90%+ sane, and I can count that with my hand
her mother commits suicide, she is the trigger of the drama
Yui is Shinj's mother, the woman you're talking about is Ritsuko's mother
no, she does a dangerous experiment with eva, she doesn't mind that she has a small child
True, but Gendo being a shit father solidified what Shinji would become and it was Gendo who despite wanting to reunite with Yui; decided it was a great idea to have an affair with the Akagis.
Yui at least helps her son out, albeit in a very brutal and animalistic manner
Gendo, Yui and Fuyutsuki were all on SEELE's side before Yui's death. None of them are heroes. Especially Gendo and Yui are responsible for the research in the first place.
Yui is only close to being a hero simply for stopping 3rd Impact
I dont think she's a hero, but she's the one that stopped SEELE in the end
Add to this the fact that his mission control does not actually want to save humanity, would have prefferred Eva-01 with his unconscious body within it berserking through all the angels, and is actively sabotaging him.
Shinji is considered useless even though he saves a humanity in which he doesn't believe. At the end, only M isato understands
I found it on an eva thread, had a good laugh, then saved it
