To be fair, it looks like Eren has been closing himself off at some point during the timeskip and he's been actively avoiding or downright rejecting every and any attempt at establishing dialogue or understanding his intentions, whether they be poor attempts (AM) or decent ones (Hange). He was unironically more honest with strangers and his old nemesis while infiltrating a enemy nation and pretending to be someone else than he's been ever since he came back to homeland.
If anything, I'd say it's Historia's character and situation that the people around her don't really know or understand. And from the looks of things post-timeskip the empathy some might have felt for her plight has either been pushed very far at back of their minds or completely forgotten.

It would be quite a waste if Isayama took one of his strongest characters,that he spent an entire arc developing, and just threw her away in the end. Considering how strongly she plays into Eren's motivations, I think she is still central to the story. If it is between Eren and a random farmer, I believe strongly it is Eren. That would be better writing in any case.
