I grew up in the 1990s, knowing in the back of my mind I was gay. Every single hero or protagonist in any story was undeniably straight. It is the norm. Its what sells. Its statistically likely. I get that. However, any popularized vaguely gay-coded character in my childhood was a campy sidekick or a vengeful immoral and narcissistic villain (e.g. Scar from the Lion King, Ginyu Squad, Zarbon, Frieza, Cell (??), etc). When you’re a young boy, you can look up to any hero on TV. Most of the time they will be equipped with all the characteristics society cherishes and we understandably want to embody. However, when you’re a straight young boy, you don’t bat an eye when the hero inevitably kisses the girl of his dreams at the end. That’s just part of the equation – the good guy gets the girl. However, when you’re gay (closeted or not), this consistent message can make you feel a little left out. “Is there something wrong with me?” “I don’t want the girl, does that mean I’m the villain?” We’re kids, we’re closeted, and we likely can’t even begin to talk with our parents about these things. It leaves young impressionable gay kids with a chip on their shoulder most of the time. See The Velvet Rage by Alan Downes if you want a more fleshed out understanding of what I’m implying here.

This summer has given me a lot of free time, as its my first summer teaching via the stipulations in my PhD fellowship contract, and therefore I only have to teach one class. What does one do with free time when all their peers work 9-5 jobs year-round? Watch movies and anime, play video games, work out, etc. I stumbled upon BNHA because I saw a lot of hype this past year in r/anime. I was shocked at how well written and mature the story was for a Shonen. For those of you who watch this for the action scenes - this show has a lot more jam-packed into it. It aint no Neon Genesis Evangelion, but it aint no 20 episode fight-build-up-time Naruto either.

When Kirishima's character was introduced I laughed to myself over his hyper-masculinity obsession. It reminded me of my own feelings during my first years in high school (trying to battle with my own understandings of who I was as a man). As I quickly caught up with the show, I bought the manga, and started reading around forums. I noticed that this initial feeling about Kirishima was not unwarranted – and I wasn’t alone. This rant isn't for the sake of arguing he will be canon gay. It's not for the sake of shipping him and Bakugo to get my friggin rocks off.

Horikoshi has the chance to do something historical, that no one this popular in a mainstream avenue like Shonen has done before. He can at minimum naturally out Kirishima as gay. Seeing as Kirishima isn't an offensive token camp placement, it would allow a generation of younger gay folk the ability to identify with someone who isn't camp or a villain. It would help save a lot of struggling pre-teens and teens the pain of searching for someone they can near fully identify with. If you’re straight, you take this for granted. Being heterosexual is equipped with its own trials and tribulations - this isn’t one of them though. Bakugo can go be Bakugo. I’m more interested in the idea that a selfless, giving, good-natured fictional character can happen to be gay. In the way that nearly every other protagonist happens to be straight. So when you see someone get excited about KiraBaku/Bakushima, its not always an introverted 15 year old girl fetishiszing homosexual relationships (which is fine – have fun). If I can be sappy for a moment– sometimes its an adult who abandoned his childhood for personal wealth and aggrandizement because he found no heroes to look up to as a kid. Maybe the kid in him finally found something he could identify with and maybe be a better person.

TL;DR: Don’t be stupid. Characters being gay does matter. At least for some people. Maybe in ways you’ve taken for granted

Really I don't care much for anime except when it comes to animating the big scenes(because the manga will always be vastly superior for everything else) and usually they do that well.

I understand the sentiment but as the kind of person who can't skip around even if I know the source material back to front (it just bugs me) the pisspoor quality is maddening - and early on not even the fights are all good. And a lot of the people I would want to discuss the series with wouldn't want a manga, but it's hard to recommend something as bad as the BC anime. The OPs are top notch though yeah.

Honestly outside of recaps Toei's World Trigger adaptation wasn't half as bad in my eyes - and it was certainly better than I expected from Toei. Maybe it was the nature of the action but the quality never dropped too far as far as I could tell. Plus I was a huge fan of the way they adapted the art - specifically the color palettes.

This is a better comparison I think. although I think Pierrot did a much better job with Yuno's themes than Asta's theme. The second one is so elegant while the first one sounds like an awesome DBZ track. They should really re-do Asta's.

Don't know why you posted one of the better BC tracks to paint a picture of the OST's weakness. Similarly if you wanted to prove a point the meme song would have worked better for HeroAca.

Asta's theme is actually really good and very hype but Battle of Deku clearly has more style and flavor - it's just a lot more unique. Plus it's not even close to the best songs on the OST. Mirio and Overhaul's themes, for examples from the S3 OST, really showcase the effort put in.

And obviously yeah if we're talking stunningly unique OSTs KnY blows them both out of the water in almost every respect - particularly in terms of ambiance. BNHA wins with motifs and character theming.

To be honest I used the wrong term - my complaint was more with scoring than the OSTs, though I stand by the comparison. A lot of the insert music is repetitive and ill-suited, as well as sounding like it could come from just about any other show.

I mostly agree. Watching it now Part 1 is pretty dated - or should I say we have better than Pierrot now? - but still it's enjoyable and at the time was the best of the best. Pain was almost perfect but there were some fuckups along the way. The focus on the paths was great and Sage Mode is my favorite power up in the series.

I don't see it being popular but getting an anime is possible just based on the author's name power alone. Same thing happened to Nobuhiro Watsuki's Buso Renkin. I doubt S8 will last long, but survive enough to get enough for a 24/26 ep anime series, so 8 volumes.

I found it to be average, which wouldn't be an issue, if it wasn't directly competing against all the other battle shonen series in the magazine.

The only real difference from the early chapters is that the enemies have super-natural powers now, but it has always been about "delinquent tries to get revenge on Black Yui for beating them up."

I didn't like Yui at first because the concept seemed to be glossing over the obvious conflict in White Yui being a "fake" personality and how it seemed a really unethical thing to do, but I've been enjoying it since they addressed it (alongside giving White Yui a character arc about her insecurities) and introduced the possibility that Black Yui is actually the "fake" personality.

This is absolutely true but not the point. I wish I had a good gif to demonstrate, but the absolute QUALITY of BC at its worst is the problem. I binged both, and BC feels hard to sit through while World Trigger was easy to manage (except for the filler arc at the end). That said, I mostly defend WT as a matter of it being far and away better than what I would expect from Toei. I really with both Toei and Pierrot would either die and lose their properties or get with the program and work seasonally.
