I'm on vol. 3 and if anything, it made me hate Asuka (more). She's even more of a cunt than canonically, but doesn't have a dramatic background to justify it. Also she isn't so confident and powerful. Even though I'm all for canon AsuShin, in SIRP I just wish Asuka would finally fuck off.

It's important symbolically to show that despite the capability for hope and love existing between these two (and by extension every individual who may choose to return) whether platonically, emotionally or romantically, they are going to continue hurting each other on the path they pave together to fulfillment.
Which is okay and even preferable, as the hurt is worth it to be together with people you care about.

It's all right. Don't go in expecting the same level of quality as you get from the actual show, but if you want more Eva content then it's worth it.

Haven't watched it in a while. The most I remember her doing for him is cooking. Before Bardiel she showed development with Misato saying it feels good to talk to others, but that wasn't directly correlated to Shinji. How else did she revolve around him, I don't remember desu.

I don't know how I'd describe Soryu but her outward person being tsun to Shinji when her inner person just wanted to be 'held' and cared for by him seems to fit an offshoot of tsundere, the only difference being she can't admit her dere feelings to herself.

I get where you're coming from and I think both of you are right in a way. She is a realistic depiction of a tsundere that is abrasive on the outside but wants warmth on the inside. In the end, she's a person, not a complete archetypal tsundere, but exhibits many of the qualities of one in a realistic and believable way. Post-eoe, they concluded their arcs and now have the capability to understand and accept themselves and others, and are now ready to depart on a new journey with that newfound knowledge. Anything could happen, and they don't need to be a 'couple'. They could end up as a couple, as friends, as emotional partners or even part ways like you said. Considering the point of the show is finding love in spite of pain, I'd say the latter is the least likely, especially considering they are all they have for an unknown period of time.

The issue is that to appreciate his characther and struggle, you really have to be able to identify with his loneliness and inability to connect with others, which is why many normalfags don't like him.

Definitely, everything in Shinji's body language makes it obvious he genuinely respects Kaji. He really was the first positive male figure in his life, since I don't think he liked the teacher he was living with too much. And of course the infamous scene of Kaji watering his melons during the Zeruel fight is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series.

I just wish his character was fleshed out more to give these scenes even more impact. I have this same problem with Gendo.
That said, although people argue Kaworu has this same problem I think it works more in his favor because humanizing the angels too much would ruin the point. Kaworu to me becomes more interesting because he's someone we can't relate to on an intrinsically human level.

Ironically I finished the Series and End of Evangelion yesterday.

Now I've always disliked the original ending, but I can see the merits of what Anno tried to do.
As Shinji was the protagonist it made sense that the most focus of the ending and the instrumentality was on him, however where it fails was the fact that it did not address what was going on outside in terms of the plot to bring about the ending, and therefore should be watched just before the final scene of EOE and not beforehand to get the most mileage out of it.
Now for Shinji his character always suffers from the weakness of being aloof and doing things only to please other people.
It's something that Asuka constantly comments on, and I think that is in part because Asuka see's that she has more in common with Shinji than she'd prefer to let on.
Both characters are filled with emotional scarring from their lives and both react in different ways in order to avoid any level of self reflections (Misato is also in this wing, but less so than these two.) Where as Shinji is dependent on the attention of others, and agrees to everything in order to avoid conflict. Asuka is more outspoken though she derives her worth also from the attention of others. Where as Shinji is more withdrawn and isolated. Asuka is more outgoing in order to avoid being isolated, and both are psychological shields that the two use in order to protect themselves from negative emotions.
That said at the End of Evangelion, Shinji chooses to reject instrumentality. (Rei's last gift to humanity) Asuka is the first person to re-materialize, because again she was the closest person to Shinji in terms of personal understanding. It is never understood though alluded to that Asuka survived instrumentality by also coming to the same conclusion that Shinji did, in not wanting to be alone, despite the fact that pain and rejection were an ever present chance.

She isn't rejecting him, she wouldn't have caressed his face if she didn't care.
Instead she's commenting on Shinji in that moment. Throughout the series, she keeps commenting on Shinji's personality, how he is emotional, and unable to express himself, or hides behind the mask of being a good person while deep down inside is a coward and a cry baby.
Every time he has an emotional outburst, she considered unmanly, she comments on how stupid or disgusting he is.
Thus she is merely commenting on the fact that after everything, after having survived instrumentality, having chosen to live, to be an individual, his tears disgust her.
