I'm not going to tell you not to enjoy things user, but take a moment to consider whether there's any real weight to her appearance or it's just the result of her being "savage". She's certainly entertaining, as all gataris are - though she's nowhere near the top - but is there really anything more? Is there any depth or complexity? Any reason why it has to be her saying the things she says, rather than someone else? It doesn't help that the narrative constantly jerks her off by giving her influence she didn't fight to earn. She shows up to take center stage for a monologue that is implied to carry more meaning than she has earned. Rather than being a personal issue independent of her relationships, this is explicitly an issue with the heart of her relationship with Araragi. Out of the entire cast she has possibly the least meaning thematically or emotionally to him - a deficit subsidized by her being his girlfriend. But it feels like Nisio only has them date out of obligation on both their parts and his. The connection has been either ridiculously one-sided or outright nonexistent since Bake. She's his "normal human girlfirend" for his "normal human life" - and admittedly this is a point made by the series but it's always been lost on me. She's not his "treasure" or the one he worships or the one who makes him the happiest. She's not the one he loves most - nor is she the one who made him who he is. She's not his pride or even his weakness. She's his "normalcy" - and I'm supposed to buy that she's "the only one for him"? Screw that.

Of course there are the obvious "good guy" things like caring so much that he wants to save even a vampire as well as contemplating death rather than becoming a murderer, but there are also some subtle things like how Araragi's sense of self doesn't get obliterated by becoming a vampire. Part of the narrative is how he only struggles in the battles because he doesn't think like a vampire and as soon as he does, he wins instantly. He takes it as a matter of course that he's going to return to being human, whereas someone else might have gone insane with power and become a true monster. That sort of strength of character seems like something that would impress Hanekawa.

The first three arcs in Owari are easily my favorite consecutive arcs in the series. While I think Tsubasa Tiger is the best conclusion arc and Shinobu Time is the most emotional individual arc, the three Sodachi arcs are consistently engaging and impactful, with some of the best storytelling techniques, a great new character, and a ton of thematic and emotional weight. Plus the anime kills those arcs - they have great visual direction, Marina Inoue is fantastic, and Mathemagics is one of the two overall best OPs in the series.

There's tons of small musical touches you can add to make calm, measured songs interesting and convey a lot of personality, Hanekawa's songs just don't do them. At least Shaft/Inu Curry did a lot of nice touches with the animation but that doesn't affect the music.

Cat has, at the very least, the most complex and well-thought out multi-season arc. She isn't too interesting before or after, but this cannot be denied. That said she still ends up second or third to last because despite Neko (Shiro) being god tier she's just not as entertaining, endearing, or dynamic as the rest of the cast.

Yeah, this is exactly how I feel at a surface level. When you really get down to it they're pretty different but that surface level is enough of a comparison to make the difference between them mean a lot.

Staple Stable was that first new shiny love moment for her. So of course its good. But the rest of them devolve into garbage. Like real life.

There's fragments of good in her character arc, but it falls flat on it's face due to huge execution flaws and because delivering a character arc about cat involves giving her lots of screentime which is just fucking boring.

Is that really an arc? There's plenty of good foreshadowing and buildup but it's not like Snail is changing over time or making headway toward a goal - it's just setting up for "a thing" to happen. Not saying this to disparage her, Snail is possibly the overall best character in the series and Shinobu Time is one of my favorite single arcs, but almost none of that is from character evolution. Neko (Shiro) is all about finalizing Hanekawa's identity and allowing her to finally change.

I wasn't bored once during Shiro. In fact, Cat has never "made me bored" even if I find her to be boring. That is, I don't want to see more of her but if her presence facilitates a good arc I don't particularly mind.

Except her best facilitation is at the level of barely acceptable and she otherwise drags the entire series down by, stealing opportunities for other characters to grow more organically, introducing really awful plot points/arcs, and generally eating up screentime that could be used on characters that have actually good arcs or are interesting or charming.

Examples? I really can't think of a time where she absolutely ruined an arc - at least not in what's been adapted.

So many arcs end with Araragi just running to her for help that Nisio self-parodied it in Koyomi It's especially egregious in Owari when she has to showboat during Araragi's confrontations with Sodachi and showing up as the magic fix it button for the darkness at the climax of fucking everything takes the wind out of Araragi finally saving himself.
The really stupid plot points don't pop up until the later novels but there's the subtle one of "this girl is super hot and smart and popular but can't make any friends but it's not her fault" that's the premise of so much of her development. Then there's the whole turning into big boss retardation later on and the awful deus ex machina in Tsubasa Sleeping where she goes beyond Araragi levels of suicidal recklessness and then survives because lol vampire blood.

I didn't mind her presence in the Sodachi arcs, but I agree to some extent on the end of Owari 2. Judging by what I've heard about novel content I imagine it would start to get to me too. I think it's a matter of "thresholds" where I'm more tolerant to her interference but eventually I'll hit the point you have. In any case I just recently started the novels so whether I read it or we get more seasons before that we'll see what happens soon.

In then end I'm not to bothered if I dislike her more. She was already in my bottom two.

My thresholds are lower in this case because Nisio is usually so much better about avoiding those pitfalls.

I dunno if the anime explained it differently but it was outright stated that the mirror world had characters "be who they wanted to be". Hachikuji's always wanted to 'grow up', Yotsugi's always had issues emoting properly, etc

Gaen's know-it-all schtick is her curse. Don't think Memes and Kaiki's were explained. The way it seems to work is that Kagenui & Tadatsuru were cursed for Yotsugi's legs and Gaen was cursed for Yotsugi's head, so I guess the arms/torso relate to Meme & Kaiki?

I think crab holds up seeing as she's pretty much done with her arc and isn't supposed to be getting into crazy supernatural hijinks with Arararagi anymore. She provides emotional support for our MC and does her work behind the scenes while Rrrgi is off doing his crazy shit. Sounds ideal to me.

He's some sort of high ranking cop, and is also on the side basically a Specialist in his own right under Gaen (he works as part of a unit instead of by himself unlike most the Specialists we've seen up to that point though). He doesn't really run into Kanbaru (who's a sports doctor now, who helps out kids in situations like the one Rouka was in) much anymore due to work. He's always kept Karen away from his problems, though they do live together in the house by themselves now (Tsukihi's studying abroad and their parents were relocated to a different district) and they basically look after each other.

What your saying there kinda reflects more on Arararagi being a shitty bf more than her not being a good character.

It's probably a good way for him to have lots of girls lusting after him and not have him pussy out time after time because he's a nervous virgin. This way he can get tempted but naturally not go any further as he's got a GF. It's a decent twist on a trope we see all the time in Harem shows.

Later on in the series that's mostly pretty true, not in Bake though in my opinion, where most of the love for her comes from. She uses Kanbaru to "test" Koyomi's loyalty, despite Kanbaru genuinely being pretty fucked in the head at this point and needing a friend, and then got jealous at the two actually becoming friends.

Even if Kaiki gave a shit about her first he's way to obscure with how he shows affection. Arararagi was direct with Crab and in turn she was direct with her feelings towards him.

Monekys OPs are better than most OPs in most series but monogatari has so many good ones they would be near the bottom in this series.

Nothing wrong with following in the footsteps of your parents if you properly commit to doing it well, which is what he's doing evidently. He relies so little on Shinobu's vampirism out that he's losing a lot of the abilities he got from the bond and trains to maintain his fitness instead now too. He's genuinely not the same sort of character he was before back when Hanekawa bailed him out all the time, for the most part he has his shit together now. Even his at-the-time issues with Gahara were more due to work commitments on both ends (Gahara works abroad now) making it harder to maintain the relationship, which is a very real thing.

I thought it was a pretty natural development from what he was doing in the original series honestly. Monster Season is filling in some of the blanks inbetween is well, it's basically Zaregoto now with Araragi being a reasonably competent detective-like figure even.

He's always done things his own way, same for Hanekawa. Him joining her would be a lot more out there than him becoming a cop/detective I feel.
Also this'll sound like a meme answer perhaps but he also still had to look after Karen, he can't just permanently leave the country (to join what's officially classed as a criminal organisation no less)

and then right after that she talks about how they should both work hard to be "that somebody" for each other (no one ever mentions that for some reason, if you cut this out it changes the meaning of what she said entirely), which is clearly what they both still desire.

Problem with that is that Hitagi seems to be the only one really working hard in their relationship, while Araragi gets to have his cake (literally) and eat it too.
