Oda is a brilliant author. You see he actually plan ahead, he doesn't make shit as he g-
> I created Supernovas right before the chapter where they got introduced. None of them existed in my plot notebooks before that chapter. I was in desperate situation, worrying, “At this rate, Sabaody arc will not be interesting enough.” Then, inspiration for 9 Supernovas came to my mind unconsciously. I should have reduced the number of Supernovas since they were too many, but after all, I made all of them appear in manga!!
This contradicts the story where an editor said that Saobady was too boring so Oda left the room for a bit and came back with the Supernova. Even if he does make up stuff on the fly, he's a good enough writer that his work is consistent and everything fits in perfectly.
Other rival superstar pirates was a great edition.

He does plan ahead, Haki was foreshadowed since chapter 1 and kept making appearances before it's introduction (for example when Garp manages to hurt Luffy with his fists at the end of the water 7 arc) Also the supernovas were a great addition in my opinion, if he actually created them just before their introductions then he is even better than I thought.

A SJ mangaka who just makes up the story as he goes and has to asspull his way out every time he writes himself into a corner as a direct result? Truly this is a brand new phenomenon that hasn't been going on since the 80's.

>Haki was foreshadowed since chapter 1 I'm the biggest OP fan ever and I will never accept this. Haki was invented from as early as DRUM no sooner. The only concrete reference to it was in Jaya by Blackbeard. Since blackbeard was first alluded to in Drum that's the earliest I will give Oda. It took way too much time from chapter 1 to Jaya for him to have had an idea of the concept to not even mention or allude to it in any other way until then.

Hasn't Oda said that he created Haki because he needed a counter to Logias, anyway?
If this is the case, he probably made it up after Alabasta.

>It took way too much time from chapter 1 to Jaya for him to have had an idea of the concept to not even mention or allude to it in any other way until then. Because most of the story until then was in East Blue a.k.a the tutorial for pirates. Haki is fucking rare then so it's no wonder we didn't see it there. Fact is that Shanks did scare the lord of the coast and we had a close up of his eye when he did it. What ability in the one piece universe does that? Emperor Haki. He can have created it to counter logias before the manga serialization.

I think Eichiro Oda is a mediocre writer, not because of that though.
The plot in One Piece is formulaic, and can get boring really fast. Every single arc is essentially the same thing repeated over and over again ad nauseam. It got boring real fast.
The characters aren't very good either. Almost all of the characters are one dimensional and have absolutely no redeeming qualities. Luffy is the most basic shounen protagonist I've seen in any anime/manga. There is no character development to be found in One Piece. None whatsoever. Usopp is still a coward even though the manga is more than 900 chapters. Luffy is still being a bad captain as always. Infact, there's more character regression than development. Anytime Usopp does something brave, it wouldn't matter because next second he goes back to being a coward. Anytime Luffy acts like a captain, it doesn't matter because he'll be acting like an idiot soon. The characters and their relationships never change at all. They behave the same way they did back in chapter 1, therefore I don't find any of them interesting.

>Every single arc is essentially the same thing repeated over and over again ad nauseam. It got boring real fast. I stopped reading here. Admit you haven't read the manga. Although there are parts that are weaker and more boring than others, no arc has the same shit all over again, this is an old and stale meme.

Oda does plan ahead, that doesn't mean he doesn't make shit up at the same time. If he didn't this manga actually would have ended in 5 years
Carson Garcia
The thing is that intimidating enemies with a glare is a common anime ability that probably predates Fist of the North Star. Griffith can do it, and it would be stupid to say that Haki is a thing in Berserk.
Kevin Thomas
And that cliche has a name in One Piece and it's called emperor Haki. What are you going to say next? That the chakra in Naruto isn't actually chakra because inner energy has been done before by other manga?
Colton Watson
King of asspulls.
Matthew Reyes
I am saying that he probably integrated an anime cliche into his power system after having used that cliche, so it proves nothing.
Julian Sanders
Ok, find me examples in One Piece when someone who doesn't have the emperor's haki managed to make a hostile animal back down and I will comply.
Adrian Bailey
This just proves he's a great author. He can just think of shit on the fly and have it be amazing.
Evan Richardson
Imo he's good with it and all but sometimes they don't go as planned. Kid was supposed to have the SN spotlight and gets overshadowed by Law instead.

Zoro.

which chapter?

that's why he is so great, he succeeds where authors like kubo fail.
William Kelly
Not him but Zoro and Usopp made girls faint without actually hurting them. Usopp did it twice. >But they were scared!! You could say the same with that goddamn sea baby king and the latter didn't even faint. Moreover, Shanks had enough time to coat his sword in Haki and sneak in between dozens of Marines to stop Akainu. But he can't do the same against a jobbing baby sea king? I can't believe that.
Luis Richardson
is it ok if i ask does anyone have a sauce for this? id like to read the full interview myself cause it seems like it'd give more insight into odas creative process.
Jackson Edwards
I asked about instances involving hostile ANIMALS. >But they were scared Yes they were, scaring your opponent because of something you said/took out isn't emperor's haki.
