Also you need to either make it clear you're interested in that person, that you see her/him as possibly something more than a friend, be more physical with the person or just go for the kiss early, in order to not confuse the other person into thinking you're in just for the friendship and doom yourself to the friendzone. Don't even bother fearing rejection, she either likes you or not, and she won't need more than 2 weeks knowing you to know for sure. Harem, and romance focused manga in general actually tends to be relatively well written compared to other genres in the medium. A lot of these stories live or die on having compelling characters or themes. Most of anything is shit, but you're way more likely to find something of traditional literary merit if you're looking around this general sphere than if you're looking into battle manga or slice of life series.
A lot of the poor perception is just that people who don't read actual books hold standards around images, automatically treating darker series as more maturely written or only considering something deep if it's convoluted. It also hurts that a lot of the people who follow harems and other romances don't care about good writing and genuinely prefer things that usually hurts a series' integrity, wanting a male lead with less characterization, hating heroines with character flaws, wanting less plot for more pandering. All sorts of shit.
But at the end of the day a lot of the harem classics and even a lot of series that get flak would hold up pretty well under examination. 90% of anything is shit but just having character arcs where some girls will have to lose goes a long way, despite all the people who wish everything had a harem end.
