I think my favorite thing about these fights is how well Akamatsu can sell the force of things, stuff like the coins getting shot and a lot of the big hits in the Negi fight have some real good impact to them. Well, Mahora honestly has a ton of crazy stuff going on even without magicians and there is some weak spell that makes people less likely to believe in magic.

The way I saw it, Chao was taking advantage of exactly how the mages had become somewhat complacent or let their guards down a bit. They're not lazy, but with the world wide recognition spell making people believe magic isn't a thing, even if the excuse sounds pretty flimsy, and Mahora Fest itself having plenty of absurd things, including actual and functioning helicopters built by school clubs, they didn't feel it would stand out all that much. And Chao took advantage of this for the sake of her plan.

That's the thing with Negima. Painful as some of the early parts are, there's a lot of set up in there which has payoff in future chapters or character development moments. Skipping large swathes of chapters wouldn't work out well. I suppose you might be able to abridge some stuff, like the dodgeball match or love potion antics.

I didn't really feel the NegixEva ship either until he went and did that dark transformation shit from the Eva scroll. At that point it seemed to me like Eva and Negi were the only immortals around and they were stuck together for eternity while the rest of the class (maybe even Sayo) passes on.
It also felt like that was the turning point where he stopped trying to become like his father and replaced him with Eva instead.
