They played up the fever appeal aspect to the extent that somebody had to fail it. There's no point having this super difficult appeal just to have everyone who tried it manage it. Realistically, to create some semblance of tension (you know, if you're a little girl who can't immediately see that Akari is going to suceed and win), you need a top character to literally take the fall.
So the choices are pretty much Hinaki and Sumire. Of the two, I think Hinaki would have sufered more for the failure. I've written long posts before about how I feel Sumire's character developed, and, in my eyes at least, the peak of Sumire's character growth was that she tried the S rank appeal. That she failed doesn't matter so much, because just attempting it showed she had overcome her insecurities, and would be able to continue travelling down the path to reach her goals.
Dumping the failure on Hinaki doesn't really do anything for her, because she didn't have the same problems that Sumire did throughout Akarigen.
I've seen people argue that Sumire should have succeeded and Hinkaki taken the fall, and I'm not going to say it would be a bad call, but I think the way they did it was the right way.

I liked that they finally showed a failed appeal since it can happen in the game if you mess up the timed prompts. The weird thing they had early on with Ichigo going ded out of the sheer strain of doing three special appeals in one performance really had nothing to do with the game.

Well I've finally finished OG Aikatsu. I've been holding it off for a long while because I never wanted it to end, but with Parade coming out I figured it was about time.
I was surprised, I managed to hold myself together pretty well for the last episode. Maybe a little tear here and there. But that fucking Aikatsu Aphorism comeback at the end, that was just too much for my poor little heart.

When are we getting an idle with crippling anxiety and mental health issues? Maybe she was an innocent child. Her loving mother and father ran a bakery and spoiled her with gifts of books with the little money they made. Every night her parents would read to her and she quickly fell in love with the enchanting stories that filled her sweet little head. She would start writing her own books, spending all of her time outside of school and learning the family trade working on her own stories, filling pages and pages with cute drawings to go along with the simple tales of magic and mystery that she so lovingly crafted.
Then one day her parents die in an unfortunate accident. Her mother and father had no real family due to circumstances, but her father's sister takes pity on her and takes her in despite the bad blood between them. Her aunt does what she can, but obviously prefers how own three children, who in turn treat their new sister with much disdain after hearing their mother speak so harshly about her now-deceased brother. The little brats would find their cousin's books, taking them and teasing her, holding her down while they laugh and tear the pages apart, leaving her a sobbing mess as she picks up the pieces. Everyday she would write new stories to replace the ones lost, being the one thing that gave her bits of happiness, but time and time again her new brothers and sisters would find them and ridicule her, stealing her pencils and paper and other materials.

Her aunt would berate her cousins in a half-hearted manner, not wanting to seem completely neglectful, but it does nothing to stop their constant hurtful antics. And so the poor girl slowly stops reading and writing. She becomes distant and cold. The years go by and her cousins start to mellow out and her aunt becomes less frigid, but the damage has already been done. Deep down she still harbors the desire to write, but the years of abuse has turned her into a neurotic mess unable to look at a blank page without nearly bursting into tears from the overwhelming amounts of anxiety. Maybe she tries other forms of creative outlet, but the results are much the same.
One day, on the way home from buying groceries, she comes across a giant TV in the city playing ads for a newly opened idol school. She's mesmerized, stopped there on the sidewalk, intently watching their song and dance; and for the first time in years, she feels a bit of a spark, a sudden warmth somewhere deep inside. Her first reaction is “I want to do that,” but her mind quickly interjects with “who am I kidding, I'd never be able to do that. I'd give up on it, just like everything else,” as she sullenly drags and scuffs her shoes on the pavement as she walks home.

She'll be graduating middle school soon, now would be the perfect opportunity to attend this new school and try to turn her life around. She makes up her mind. She'll try. And then we see her try and fail to do the most basic idle things as her fragile mental health is so easily shaken up. Backstage before the entrance examination, before she goes on and performs the song and dance she practiced in secret at home, she's practically on the verge of a serious panic attack when the principal notices her having a hard time and lends a concerned hand. Thanks to his efforts she's able to calm down enough to walk on stage and totally bomb her performance, but sympathetic to her plight, the principal accepts her into the school, hoping that she can make positive changes to her life. He will work with her as long as she is willing to work.
And then she keeps fucking everything up anyways.

Do you like Pop type Aikatsu songs?
They are cute but the vocals are... too “safe” in my opinion, like they are not moe/pop/silly enough because they’re sung by “proper singers” not by voice actresses.
So there is not a kawaii or denpa-like vocal, not like in Pretty Series or Idolmaster. I think only parts of Miel Miere sounds “Pop” in that way. And even then it’s a little subdued.
I think Cool and Sexy Aikatsu songs fit the vocals best, so they deliver the full aesthetic.

I saw Akatsukin at a Aikatsu Style pop up shop in Akihabara yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Ebipons in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Okyakusan, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by translating really loudly.
