Then just after that we got a lore dump with Gendou and Fuyutski then after that the Asuka episode, then a Rei episode.
Then when the focus finally gets shifted back towards Shinji he spends most of the episode abanding the already established cast for a new character only to kill him in the end then breakdowns after gay twink's death. Then the last two fucking episodes of the show are just repeating the same shit we already know about the characters than having each character spout out philosophical bullshit and pointing out the obvious with static poses and reused scenes flashing to make it look mystical.
Then in the movie, he proceeds to do nothing for 99% of the runtime while fan-favorite characters die for him and then he proceeds to end the world.

The anime dropped heavily with the last arc thank god we have the manga to make up for this mess.
In the manga Touji's fears for being a pilot are revealed as he and Shinji talk it out. Shinji is way more fucking concerned for Rei as they actually have bonding moments which explains Rei's wanting to Fuse with Shinji. Kaworu is introduced earlier to set up his and Shinji's bond and Shinji doesn't abandon Misato or anybody to be gay. To add more angst to the fire, Touji dies and Kensuke ends their friendship over that. He abandons everybody and says he wished he never the cast to begin with since all of these encounters brought him nothing but pain. Also Gendou is such a chad in the manga and has a fucking character rather then "Muh Yui". It turns out that Yui was the only person that loved Gendou ever since he was abandoned by his parents. He became overly dependant on Yui's love and saw her as a light from heaven in this dark world and actually hated Shinji because he stole Gendou's light. Also the fact that he fucking generates A.T fields from his hand after eating Adam and goes on a murder spree after revealing his diabolical plan to Shinji really makes the manga better than the anime.

Plot is mostly the same with like a quarter of the episodes subtracted, there are character scenes added like flashbacks for Shinji and a backstory for Kaji that don't really change events, but all the characterizations start different enough that they feel like a different cast anyway.

Kaworu "remembers" shit because he is similarly to Ayanami a series of clones with transplanted memories in Rebuild. It has nothing to do with any timeloops. "This time I will make you happy" is a reference to what Gendo has told some other version of Kaworu who died before him. In 3.0 it's revealed that what Kaworu thought would make Shinji happy is opening the door of guff. Essentially Kaworu is just a retard who is being used by Gendo to do his bidding by being manipulated with a "do it it'll make Shinji happy" bs Gnedo is feeding him.
Akira Ishida literally says Kaworu is timelooping, Evageeks retard. He's been a timelooper since the 1998 SRW games.

And that's wrong because Shinji is hardly depressed and he actually has less of a reaction over Toji's death than maiming in the anime. The optics of that situation in the manga re actually even worse than they are in the anime because while the anime had Shinji get over it due to Toji being alive, the manga focuses on it even less and has Shinji get over Toji's death just as fast with even more obnoxious Kaworu hijinks. And at the end of the day this is all still just shallow misery porn while the anime had something more interesting to say about Shinji as a character. In the anime Toji actually has a character moment with Shinji, he doesn't blame him for anything and is more worried about Shinji's wellbeing, but Shinji doesn't try to understand him, he runs away from Toji out of his own free will instead of simply not being able to see him. This situation reinforces a theme about Shinji's character, running away from people when they need him. Shinji can't run away from Toji if he's dead. Overal the situation is more nuanced and intersting than in the manga which simplifies literally everything.

Kaworu wakes up in a coffin which lays next to a few more opened coffins to his left, and a few closed ones to his right. What do you think came from the opened ones? What do you think is in the closed coffins? I'll tell you what, the Kaworu you see in the new trailer is what came out of the nest closed coffin to his right.
