Lain and Cowboy Bebop came out in 98. Imagine if today we considered a year with two heavy hitter classics a slow year.

I'm that user and I strongly dislike CB, I think it's horrendously overrated, largely because the only genre that episodic formats work with is comedy.
If your show is episodic to me that just screams "I'm too lazy to make a proper overarching narrative with one strong plotline".
