Just pointing out how similar their characters are. Goku losing that fight when he was at his peak(as far as we knew) helped develop his character a lot, while Gon sacrificed his powers and life only to be phoenix downed by some magickal bullshit genie that came out of nowhere.

One of the reasons why Gon was able to do it was his present mental state. Gon won't do this shit in fight with Goku

Goku has a better character. Gon keeps looking for his baby daddy, while Goku accepted his race 's culture, but still highly values his (adoptive) grandpa, so much so he named his boy after him.

Don't forget that Goku in the Cell and Buu saga had an almost mentor like character, which is far different than the Goku we met in early DB. His character did develop.

Even before that he accepted his grandpa was gone and went out on his own will. Not to follow in someones steps

Goku. I like gon but when you think about it, he doesn't win many fights. He didn't beat hisoka, he had to Outlast the first guy who broke his arm at the end of Hunter exam and couldn't beat him. He only beat the bomb guy by blowing up his arm and then getting his arm recovered with that spell, and he only beat pitou by killing himself with the contract.

Goku would win but he would let his opponent get stronger, so he would lose eventually.
