Neither got this far, they both went in original directions. The Shaft OVAs covered parts of the later arcs and the movie did one of Akamatsu's planned endings.

As someone who considers Negima one of their favorite manga, I enjoy UQ, and actually think the Negima bits in it hurt it more than help it. I think your enjoyment of the series relies a lot on your feelings towards Negima's ending. I've noticed that typically if someone is still angry and bitter they'll perceive the manga much more negatively, especially with some revelations that a lot of people consider retcons and get upset about it.
Personally I don't consider it to be any better or worse than the latter half of Negima writing-wise. Also UQ does have ecchi.
