His backstory in PHF which lead up to him bashing a teachers head in with a dictionary was regarding his grandmother and being taunted about not being able to go to her funeral, while in the anime the teacher in question was instead just a pedo who was trying to coerce Fugo into letting him do what he wanted in exchange for giving him the answers to upcoming tests.
It was a relatively small change, all things considered, but it was a change nonetheless which kind of signalled pretty clearly that they weren't going by PHF's storyline.
