I don’t believe the manga could have this quality and complexity without hiatuses. I believe the usual manga system of weekly releases is very restricting. I’m sure a lot of mangaka would want to do more complex stories, but can’t because they need to release weekly chapters and have to worry about getting axed etc. Togashi should take hiatuses. Ideally, we’d get 20 to 30 chapters an year. The current situation isn’t ideal, but it’s gotten better lately with regular updates, I believe with the current schedule it would be an average of 15 chapters an year which is not ideal but not horrible.
I mean, I could bet all my money that it would be ten times harder for Togashi to come up with such ingenious storytelling methods like pic related from a recent chapter.

The Palace Invasion then takes the form of an Elizabethan Drama Theather play, brilliant in it's juxtaposition by means of the stage blocking and it's discourse being underlined by the scene composition itself.

Just like Melville in the mid-19th century, Togashi takes advantage of this resources. In particular comes to mind the parallel between Moby Dick's The Dock and Gon and Pitou's encounter. In both instances, the symbolic prowess of the narrative is at it's peak.

Ahab's golden coin becomes a symbolic vehicle, a mirror in which the crew of the Pequod can see themselves reflected and reinterpreted. In HxH's scene, Gon sees Pitou as a monster but Killua sees Pitou himself as a mother, two drastically different interpretations of the same scenario that reframe the core of the conflict. Pitou himself first tries to appeal to Gon's humane side, when that fails, he appeals to Gon's thirst for revenge. Gon desperately tries to cling to the image he had constructed of Pitou as a an uncaring monster but eventually has to grant him even just a bit of humanity.

Man is but a chimera of contradictions and HxH at it's peak is able to unravel them.

The thing that most struck me most about HxH is how the entire Chimera Ant arc felt like one long work of literature, like a 19th century baroque novel or a Shakespearean tragedy. It's rife with symbolism, irony, themes, and felt appropriately mature and tonally rich. Some of the passages spoken by the narrator were so beautiful and memorable (e.g. the humans in the sky line), and the narration served to create the feeling that I was reading some intricate tapestry of prose. I loved how tragic and anticlimactic the death of Meruem was, because it was richly meaningful in tandem with the themes presented by the arc; and it's because of this that I speak of him in the same way I do as Macbeth, or Oedipus, or John Milton's Lucifer. Some scenes, like the match-cut of the boots stomping on the insects between the Rose bomb used on human cities spoke to me on a visceral level, just as Classic Lit does.
