The more time you spent in a place or with an object, the more your thoughts get burned into it and stick around even after you're dead. Once paranormal shit happens there'll pretty much be a ghost of who you were at the time running about. You have to remember that Elf9 has had her own memories and experience too.
In a manner of speaking, Elf9 lived the life that Carol's father wanted for her. That is to say, an innocent life where she uses her knowledge to appreciate the wonders of the world and help people. When Carol fused back with Elf9 at the end of GX, she too began to live the life Elf9 had and feel the same experiences as her own.
But as you said, all that is Carol is in Elf9 now. And this includes her more feisty and battle hardened side. The combined trauma of the dolls dying and the will to live just allowed her to access that part of her again. It was always there.
