Toji is too good and balanced of a person to fit as a protag of a show like Evangelion. He does work great as a foil for a cowardly and egocentric person like Shinji though. Toji's presence in Shinji's life allows him to grow as a person, and he immediately regresses when Toji is gone, or rather, when Shinji fails tremendously as a person and abandons Toji in order to wallow in his emotional pain.

It really was only Toji who was like that for Shinji.
Even Kensuke was a dick to him and started mocking him for running away just because he was jealous of not getting to be a pilot.

He wasn't mocking him but berating him, even after Toji told him they would never hold it against Shinji if he decided not to pilot. Kensuke really did not understand Shinji the way Toji did.

Honestly I’m kinda sad Toji didn’t really get the chance to pilot, even if he didn’t really want to. He would’ve brought a great dynamic to the rest of the pilots imo

If he got to pilot and survive the psycho angels he would have gotten torn to shreds by the MP Evas with Asuka, not a good fate if you ask me.

Kensuke was making raw little personal confessions to a brick wall, looking for some response and because this was the last opportunity to say anything before evacuation. Toji, too, spent the previous two episodes dreading just that he'd been selected during peacetime to start learning something Shinji had been unnaturally at-home in the entire time Toji knew Shinji. They both viewed Shinji as being sort of beyond them, maybe retarded about the little boy stuff they knew, but that it was nothing compared to having the after-school job with all the stark responsibilities and consequences for everyone's lives.

There is a deleted scene from EoE that strongly implies that Shinji's classmates ended up in the MPEvas.

All in all getting torn up by a regular Eva was less traumatic than getting torn up to the core by the AT field breaking Lances of Longinus and literally having the injuries manifest on his body. He spent two months as a cripple, then got tanged with a possibility of regenerating a whole and healthy body out of the LCL. Either way, the one who would suffer less in case Toji avoided Bardiel was Shinji as the overal outcome of Toji's fate is pretty similar in both instances.

He gets to do more in Neon Genesis Evangelion: ANIMA. He gets to pilot test machines and assist with the development. He ends up becoming deputy commander of NERV Japan. The light novel spin-off is getting an English release from Seven Seas with the first volumes digital release next week.

Also cut for not making a lot of sense, as the destroyed Tokyo-3 had already been evacuated during the series. It was in service to having Shinji's friends still there for him to willingly go meet with and have kind of a reassuring scene before they leave, which also didn't really work and didn't get in.

Instead of Shinji holding Kaworu in Eva 01's hand for ten minutes they should have put that scene in the show at the start of ep 24. It's such a crime that Toji never appears or talks to Shinji again and the only resolution he ever gets is being put on a buss off camera. Not even a cameo in EoE. Wtf Anno, was a solid character arc and one of Shinji's friendships worth this little to you?
