Well my presumption lies on the fact that it would make sense as a cover if Anya keeps speaking French in public. You might also make the argument that the nobility would speak French as a prestige language anyway.

She is. She spends half of the chapters reading people's minds, reacting to it and using their train thoughts to her advantage. Sometimes it fails spectacularly, sometimes she succeeds.
The one who is actually underusing her gimmick is Yor, who doesn't really go around killing much after the very first chapters, and just goes 'dangerous mama bear' from time to time.
