I think its more setting up that he actually just has either photographic or incredibly good memory as his talent.

I really wouldn't doubt him that much, since he's lived most of his life in Ishigami Village and his parents were running away from someone petrifying others. The dude is just humble as hell, he didn't even claim a name for himself until he spoke about leading Senku to the island so he could find out his origins, revealing old name.

Whatever origins he may have, he's a member of the Kingdom of Science now. And that's all that matters.

Something's going to go wrong with the dive, right? No reason to have the pump explode unless Inagaki wanted to limit it to just Ryusui and Soyuz diving down. It'll be nice for Soyuz to have some time to shine, it looks like his skill is going to be photographic memory, that could have a lot of applications.

It's a skill he shares with only Senku, and he's the resident hopeless romantic too, as well as being a power team member. I really like his characterization.
