Actually that was basically the implication of the last chapter. That's why Yugami was adamant that he and Chihiro were not friends on the last few pages. Chihiro doesn't really get it though, but she did get a gut feeling that there was something different.

So there's quite a few signs of yugami appreciating their friendship despite him trying to keep his perfect distance with her (and kadota for that matter), but can any of them be considered more than that? I already know how it ends, so I'm just curious here.
There's one of him grinning in front of the computer (for presumably quite some time) watching her fight back against the transfer to america (just like with his gf when he was young who had to move). He has no real justification for wanting this to happen either, since he has no idea about her dad's promise, so this isn't just him looking out for her wellbeing like with the letter or the initial push he gave her to make some friends.
There's also the earlobes blew everything away moment, where he's upset about something he did that might've ruined the perfect distance he has between her or everyone else he's close with. Despite how he acts around others there's nothing that hints towards him being socially autistic, so there's no way he didn't know what chihiro meant by touching the earlobes. My guess is he misjudged the situation, took the risk and lost.
As the other user said, fleshed out characters with meaningful development. Also, strong and cohesive narratives and themes/concepts that don't feel like an asspull and are foreshadowed nicely throughout the entire series. And unlike other similar stories, events and plot developments (mostly) happen with reason, and feel less like the writer just threw darts at a board to decide what happens next as if change for the sake of change makes the story more realistic.
Yugami's philosophy and worldview is well developed despite being controversial verging on unlikable, so the author likely knows the subject matter like the palm of his hand. Even the assholish characters have redeemable qualities and deep personalities that make them at least worthy of sympathy, and in the end none of the characters can really be considered unlikable.

Well, as yugami said, while he doesn't need any friends and he DEFINITELY doesn't want to depend on someone else, that doesn't mean he doesn't care about people in general. You see his actions are ultimately for the good of the people he meets, he's really caring with his family (although not affectionate), and really by trading favours back and forth with chihiro by this point he is really invested in her maturing into a well adjusted woman.
It's just happens that he really likes what chihiro is growing into, although he realize it himself because the thought didn't cross his mind. Just look at how long it took for him to decide if he wanted a girlfriend when Hayashyiama asked him.

I don't think that's necessarily a "want", but more of a need. He definitely doesn't mind having "friends" around, like what chapter 70 points out with the perfect distance thing. Keep in mind that yugami is implied to have experienced quite a bit of trauma when he was younger with regards to friendship.
Aside from the girlfriend shit I mentioned, there's also his cousin being an asshole towards him, and his old friendship with his rival. The last one is especially hard hitting, since yugami doesn't seem to know why his mentor and one of his best friends turned a cold shoulder to him all of a sudden. The fact that he's known to shut out any shitty memories, combined with his total amnesia about their old friendship and how he's mentioned to never look back at the past (or something like that) before, topped off with how he's shown to be pretty friendly towards others despite being quite autistic, it's very likely this is the catalyst or the tipping point that resulted in his current independence.

Yup, it's the same sort of affection he has for kadota or chihiro. One interesting point here is how in the flashbacks he's shown to be openly affectionate towards his sister, catering to her unreasonable demands. Something definitely happened in the meantime.

That's really just yugami's way of feigning friendship. By "paying back his favors" he's able to convince himself he doesn't *need* their friendship at all. I'm not suggesting that the manga should change him or his identity here; borrowing the sea anemone analogy, the clownfish isn't an essential part of the life of an anemone, but allows it to grow up to three times its former size with the clownfish around.

Are we reading the same manga? There is no signs that Yugami ever thought about Hayashiyama as a friend. If anything it was Hayashiyama who was shocked that someone had treated as a friend didn't remember him.

The fuck? The manga straight up shows him with hayashi and kadota together when they were younger multiple times. This was back when he wasn't so adamant about not needing friends to the point of rejecting them.

That's because they were. Kadota still thinks of the three of them as friends, as does hayashiyama. From what little flashbacks we can see the three of them seem pretty happy hanging out with each other. There's no reason why you can't treat someone as a friend and forget about them completely later on. Even if it's a little weird. Wonder if the manga will address this in more detail than just "he's just that kind of person"
