There's a drama CD that just went on sale which is described as an epilogue for the anime and a potential prologue for a sequel. It takes place about a month after the tournament the anime ended on, and the plot is supposed to focus on Maki from Kanami and Hiyori's perspective. Here's just the sample for it.

What is this show about?

The plot of the second half was the definition of engaging, in that there was so much shit going on you practically had to rewatch every episode just to keep up with what was happening. The plot of the first half was very straightforward even if they didn't spoonfeed the audience much. But it's impressive that it never had a single episode that could be considered filler. The plot was always pushing forward, with or without the audience. Didn't do much for its popularity, but it made it highly entertaining.

It was very obvious from the first episodes that they all didn't really like each other but once Yume dies, we suddenly learn they all used to be super best friends and still like each other and apparently everybody always loved Yume the whole time and we never saw any of that beforehand. It's completely at odds from what we were seeing in the first half.

The enemy of the state stuff ended 3 episodes in. And you can't say "the government organization is secretly evil and killing the leader will magically fix everything" is any less of a JRPG plot. The second half played with expectations constantly even if it was about stopping an ancient evil.

No they didn't. They openly admit they never got close enough to understand Yomi. Maki and Szk were always rivals, and they only get close after Maki's grief over Yume. Maki showed high respect for Yume from the very first episode, but Szk never seemed to care all that much in the anime. Yomi respected that Yume lived and died as a warrior. But the story of the elite guard is a very dysfunctional one centered on Maki losing everything and trying to keep it together.

It's nice that they spelled this part out, because it's a cool scene and I feel like it went over people's heads when Kanami used a technique from every character she fought across the show against Tagitsu. They also made it obvious Minato was possessing Kanami's body. I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Toji, is in fact, Miko/Toji, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Toji no Miko. Toji is not an an occupation unto itself, but rather another skill set of a fully qualified Miko made useful by the utsushi, jin'i and vital okatana components comprising a full proficiency as defined by the Five Schools.
Many sword users use a modified version of the Miko system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Miko which is widely used today is often called “Toji”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Miko system, developed by the ancient Miko. There really is a Toji, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the abilities they use.
Toji is the proficiency: the training in the system that hones the abilities of the okatana user. The proficiency is an essential part of the occupation but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a fully qualified shrine maiden. Toji is normally used in combination with the Miko occupation: the whole system is basically Miko with Toji added, or Miko/Toji. All the so-called “Toji” girls are really girls who are Miko/Toji.

I won't fault you for that, but I didn't feel that invested either until the second half. The interesting thing about the himes is how they're presented though. The confusion surrounding them, and then the way Tagitsu embodies a generational problem with no solution and that no one deserves, not even her. It never forgets that she's a victim.

Juujou Kanami has always been canon.
The way they used the future sight was so interesting because nobody ever stopped to explain it. So even when Hiyori gets ahold of it, she doesn't know how to use it and it backfires. It basically only shows you the future that you ask it about, so it can't take into account things you don't know or won't try. And since Hiyori was panicking, she could only see herself losing. She couldn't stop it either, which is why her fears caused her to unconsciously see herself killing Kanami and Yukari.

The nature of Aradama was fully expanded within the second cour. This would also be a clue to justifying each of the three Himes' goals.
Tagitsuhime represents the resentment of Aradama towards humans. A manmade process separated noro from aradama, and as noro turn into these higher beings, they are able to feel this hate towards the humans that pulled them apart from the tamahagane they are supposed to be one with. She has "hands" on her ears—she "hears no evil", but also cannot listen to human reason.
Takirihime represents the twisted compassion aradama has to humanity. She believes that as greater beings, humanity must fall under the rule of aradama. She has a point; after all, noro and tamahagane share a divine origin, and have been regarded as gods (as Aramitama). She has "hands" on her eyes—she "sees no evil", but also cannot view herself with humans on equal terms.
Ichikishimahime represents the desperation to cure the emptiness of Aradama by merging with humans. She was the mastermind of the Myouga Project that gave us the Elite Guards and Ayumu, and we can imply here that Ichikishimahime gave up on wanting to reunite with tamahagane so she went for humans as the next best thing to curb their emptiness. She has "hands" on her mouth—she "speaks no evil", but is not given the chance to speak her mind.

When it comes to mobage, I feel like the question is "how not bad is it." Best I can say is it can be played pretty casually, without asking for that much of your time or money compared to others. The 3D models, music, and card art are pretty high quality, and there's constant side event stories if you wanted to see more of the less serious side of the girls. The main story does its own thing sometimes, but it's been stuck following the anime plot for too long. The game original characters don't feel out of place; in fact the anime now feels a little empty without them.
Poor girl trained all year to get here and jobs on the first swing.

This should be the full feed. I love when a story about fighting just ends with characters talking. This exchange with Hiyori and Kagari was so important, and it happened while Kanami fought Minato offscreen. Because they understand the strength of their characters. Then we get Kanami breaking down crying when she says goodbye to her mom for the last time, after she's been holding it in all these years and never even cried at her funeral. Not to mention Tagitsu hiding out of shame, and the moms inviting her to be with them. It was all highly cathartic.

The threads were way more active in the second half. We went from having 1-2 a week to 1-2 a day. And that was also where the speculah went wild. The first half was mostly just wondering if Yukari was the real hero and the USA was pulling the strings. I always felt like the people who hated the second half were the ones who came in late and marathoned it without having time to soak it in. Because the threads were nothing but positive at the time.

This was confirmed to be Minato possessing Kanami's unconscious body. Which is also an idea they didn't have time to explore, but still. Kanami is a cheater who gets 8 hours a night to tirelessly practice new things in her sleep. Most of the scenes the manga adds were actually cut from the anime, so you can get an idea of what the full first cour should have looked like. Personally, I think they needed to work on Maki looking like less of a jobber. She loses every fight right away.

I think it would have been better off had Hiyori been able to follow through with her technique and seal herself, Tagitsu, and Yukari in hell for all eternity, and dedicate the rest to dealing with the political aftermath, uncovering the truth of the past, and reconciliation.

They added to the confusion of the situation, and bane was important to Yukari. Hiyori fusing with her was also a fantastic ironic twist that played into the generational themes. And really, it was all about Kanami and Hiyori staying together and dealing with the problem their moms left them. There's not much left if Hiyori, Tagitsu, and Yukari are out of the story.
The moms were half stuck in the netherworld after the sealing, along with the real Chidori and Kogarasumaru. The utsushi versions Kanami and Hiyori had linked them together. The game kind of went into it in more detail.

Hiyori seemingly just goes with it offscreen without any consideration, we get a couple of cool fights out of it, and then two episodes later she's completely normal again, completely unchanged from her pre-fusion self. Also, at what point had Kagari fused with an aradama?

Which really speaks a lot as to how little the other characters matter despite how many of them there are. And it's not like putting those three in the netherworld completely offscreens them; their character development would come in parallel to the the characters in the real world uncovering the truth about Sagami Bay.

The first cour had two episodes that used the majority of their screentime on exposition, and while I was a fan of the blind start, a lot of people had no faith in where it was going early on because of all the time spent on Kanami and Hiyori sitting in a room or wandering through the woods. I don't know how you can call it fast or brutal in comparison to the second cour, which threw out a plot twist every other episode. Especially brutal when there was a literal school slashing. The second cour did start a little slow, but that's to be expected coming off of the first climax. And the timeskip with little explanation of how things progressed kept it interesting. I love the whole show, but the first half is the part of the rollercoaster where it gradually and steadily goes up and the second half is where it comes screaming down with loop de loops.
