All of the Haibane are very likely suicides who are now in some sort of limbo or purgatory due to their struggles in life being unresolved. They can only leave the town once they come to terms with's haunting them. Biggest message of the show is that you should ASK FOR HELP if you're having a hard time, no matter how scary it seems.

HR's is great for iyashikei with a more somber or melancholy tone. Like Gisele Alain or Witch Hat Atelier.
