Killing off a character almost every episode made each individual death feel pretty meaningless. It became a game of "oh boy who's gonna die this week".

Too much edge for it's own good, it was a chore to read since there was a high chance a character I liked would die so I could barely get connected to anyone.

I also don't have problem with people dying, but some of the death have no weight to them, thus the more people die, the more meaningless those dead become.

They also require the most powerful sorts of monsters, that while poorly explained were noted to be rare. The sequel series Hinowa ga Yuku brings up Meihou, which are weapons made from monsters in the not-japan nation of Wakoku, but the techniques to do so are apparently only known in that region. The prequel series has Shingu, which are an attempt by the empire to make more Teigu, and they all suck, because they didn't have what it took to make proper Teigu.
