Its bit of a bummer that you cant really solve the mysteries yourself if you dont know exactly how the magic in this world works (and sometimes you dont know even if you do) but I dont let it bother me. It has pretty calm tone and pace generally so I enjoy watching it, and the lore is pretty interesting so I dont mind it when they drone about it.

Lancer's legend is built on soloing armies day after day. You can't really catch him if he decides to run. Few servants are as good and fast in him in combat and he's also amazing at surviving too.

All we know is that it's a large-scale conflict on par with a HGW with Waver and Rin wanting to dismantle it, versus the Clock Tower wanting it. Given that it is the Grail we're talking about, it's not out of the question that someone triggers some function in it to function Servants to defend or destroy it.
