The original anime went on for way too long ever since the point where Carlos got crippled. AnJ2 had plenty of retarded shit like when that Philippino (or whatever, the savage kid) was doing backflips in the ring. AnJ is also about Joe first and foremost so if you like any of the supporting cast or maybe want to get more of a commentary on boxing from a more technical level, you're shit out of luck. Earlier parts when Joe is in juvvie had some kino moments like that staredown between him and Rikishi, but aside from that it also dragged on.
It's a classic, and you appreciate Joe mellowing out given how much of a fucking dick he was at the beginning, but it had plenty of dumb shit.

I've never felt such pure relief from any event in any story, the buildup at Sai made me genuinely feel like part of a large effort using up literally everything to last just seconds longer. The foreshadowing for their arrival and it coming under-estimate were powerful as fuck, and then it topped off with the Houken fight and Riboku/No-teeth getting BTFO by Yotanwa with both force and words. I can't think of anything else even close.
Also I was hasty, this and the following page are by far the greatest. The juxtaposition of the matter-of-fact simplicity of the line and the arduous hell we saw firsthand to get there is beautiful
