Meanwhile, Aqua has horrible motives - prior to being isekai'd, all she wanted to do was sit around and be worshiped by mortals who really deserved someone more competent than her as an afterlife social worker (imagine the greatest humans who ever lived having to deal with Aqua before getting reincarnated; "Holy shit, you got stabbed by your best friend that you wanted to make heir to your estates if your adopted son Octavian died before you, lol what a fucking loser you are Gaius.") and after getting isekai'd Aqua wants to kill off the few remaining brain and liver cells in her body before returning to her lofty position as afterlife social worker. Darkness, on the other hand, has perverted motivations; but is more or less content with her life. If she can be the party's meatshield and also get lewded by some servant of evil, Darkness is happy. So her motives aren't really relevant most of the time and thus are not as strong.

Megumin's struggle to master explosions is never ending. So long as her explosive ability can be improved, Megumin will keep striving and struggling. Thus she is inherently the most interesting character.

Having a simple clear motive isn't one dimensional. Megumin has plenty of other things going on in her life, notably how she quietly rejects the chuuni culture of her hometown. But that culture and upbringing are things she either is unwilling to change or cannot change because they're in the past, so that doesn't enter into her motivations.

Really, Aqua is the one dimensional character of the series. So retarded and useless she is incapable of having a character arc, because that would have to involve realizing just how stupid and useless she is.

They typically use 魔法使い, which just means Magic User. But they will also use Wizard specifically to refer to the class. I don't think they have ever used Sorcerer as a separate thing. Generally, any magic user falls under the same category.

No no, she went to magic school, and they have many spells which they can learn(although learning mechanics are different than DnD). That all fits for a wizard. Her spellcasting though is of a sorcerer as she uses only a limited amount of spells(1 in her case) and calls upon powers of explosion(result of her chuunibyou probably). In DnD, this would mean she's playing a broken wizard or that she's multiclassing.

There are a few different terms for magic users, but there's not really any hard and fast rules as to which translates best to what. For that matter, there's not really an actual standard to which English terms for magic user mean exactly what, either. Some games and other works of fiction have their own idea about what each definitely means, but they by and large don't line up with those of any other games, novels, comics, etc.
