I think it's a common misconception because people just see that Griffith loves guts and that he's really important to him but don't really understand why.
The reason Griffith is so fond of Guts is because Guts isn't like anyone else in the Hawk. While he looks up to griffith to an extent, he doesn't like to show it and speaks to him as a friend or an "equal". Guts really doesn't give a fuck about rank or the like, he doesn't get the deal. All throughout berserk you see cowards and imbiciles that are of high stature. When the king stumbles upon Griffith and Guts talking, the thought of kneeling doesn't even cross his mind.
This makes Griffith find a sense of comfort in him he's never found anywhere else. He can be unmasked with him, he can let go of his persona and be at his most vulnerable with him.
This is great for doing dirty shit like asssasinations and the like, everyone has a dark side and Griffith especially. And everyone needs to vent that dark side, normal people do that all the time, but Griffith can't. He must uphold that godly stature.
