Not really, if you want to get the references to the characters and the base plot knowing Atom's backstory through a quick summary and watching the two-parter episodes "The Greatest Robot in the World" would be enough. Urasawa greatly admires Tezuka but he does his own thing, think Spielberg's AI and Pinocchio.

Can't go wrong with the 80s version. The 1963 has a lot of boring episodes right next to the very best ones. 80s is almost entirely good. Watch the 60s movie while you're at it.
