Super is not better than DB or Z, but its better than GT. GT tried to be DB again by making Goku a kid again, making the Pilaf gang be the reason for the arc and attempting to bring that "advenutre" feeling in a time where everyone knew full well that Goku could solve everything with a couple of ITs, and failed. Then it tried to be Z again and failed harder by not having a single original idea within that attempt. Goku went to hell to fight Frieza and Cell again to try for the nostalgia, then they fought Super 17, not a new or even an attempt at a new character, then they fought Baby, who's character and arc were a mash up of the Cell and Buu arcs. Nothing new. Then the only original and interesting thing it did, the Black Star DB's and SS4, fell so flat on it's face that it doesn't make up for anything. Sometimes I'm floored by the fact that it's 2019 and people still defend GT, and even more earnestly now that they can point fingers at Super, which is also not better than DB or Z, but at least tolerable with a few attempts at new things, even if some of those things were Toyo taking from his fanfiction. Even the current arc of Super is following the same story beats of the DK Piccolo arc, but it has the twists it needs to be interesting.

In contrast, a Pitou is best girl and my wife Hunterchad reads everything he can, it is what makes him a Hunterchad, he has read it all, seen it all, and simply no shonen compares to Hunter x Hunter because its isn't just a shonen, its literature itself. I, for one, can't wait for the lovecraftian elements Togashi is waiting to introduce in Dark Continent.

This amazingly well written and extremely complex piece of literature has been going on for several decades now and is still going. So when I come into a Hunter x Hunter thread I feel like im not only here with my fellow Hunterchads. I am here with everyone else, experiencing the magic that is HxH. I see great discussion day after day. New points being brought up and old ones being held high for the board to see. The HxH fan just comes off as an incredibly curious person who's extremely interested in the whole world. In that respect, people like Kite, Ging, and Netero are fantastic emblems of this theme, that the core of what it means to be a "hunterchad" is something you can and should strive for irl. Always seeking something new, looking for different perspectives and enriching your own abilities and understanding by challenging yourself. Biology, history, language, adventure, exploration, culture, video games, ruins, medicine, philosophy, math, toys, nerd hobbies, wildlife preservation, etc etc - there's a near infinite amount of things to see and do and you should explore them to the fullest.

Well, I was a well-renowned DBfag for decades. After reading HxH, I realized how wrong I was:
I finished the Hunter Exam arc, and I was flabbergasted by the amount of violence and deconstruction in this seemingly "generic tournament arc." I couldn't be any more wrong. I realized that shounen manga could create interesting competitions that delves into the human psyche like the Path of Majority Rules and prioritizing which tags one must acquire in phase 4 (1 three points or 3 one point). The fact the last phase wasn't about who's stronger but who's less willing to surrender was brilliant. Everything was new. My mind was being cleansed by these new approaches. But still... After all this I still had this conviction that DBZ was the better manga..

I finished the Yorknew auction arc. At this point I started having doubts. Doubts that everything I believed since 2010 was wrong. That Dragon Ball is the pinnacle of manga. It wasn't just about violence and ideas. It was the sheer characterization and foresight of the mangaka to put his characters into certain situations. The requiem, the zoldycks clash, Chrollo's nonchalance to being captured by Kurapika since it was not mentioned in his prophecy. I saw an author willing to raise the scale of danger to its utmost limit knowing very well he can create a great payoff out of it.

At this point, I realized Togashi's brilliance and diligence as a writer. He is different. In that last month, I understood the essence of Togashi, and why he is so special. The thing that most struck me most about Hunter x Hunter is how the entire Chimera Ant arc felt like one long work of literature, like a 19th century baroque novel or a Shakespearean tragedy. It's rife with symbolism, irony, themes, and felt appropriately mature and tonally rich. Some of the passages spoken by the narrator were so beautiful and memorable (e.g. the humans in the sky line), and the narration served to create the feeling that I was reading some intricate tapestry of prose. I loved how tragic and anticlimactic the death of Meruem was, because it was richly meaningful in tandem with the themes presented by the arc; and it's because of this that I speak of him in the same way I do as Macbeth, or Oedipus, or John Milton's Lucifer. Some scenes, like the match-cut of the boots stomping on the insects between the Rose bomb used on human cities spoke to me on a visceral level, just as Classic Lit does.

For how much she berates goku, she isn't going to leave his side because he's the man she choose and for that she does everything from him. If the series doesn't show goku and chichi relationship in a good manner it's because in z goku is incapacitated or left away from the cast. In their moments of peace it's assumed that both goku and chichi are fine with each other, as it's shown between the 10 days for the cell games that they both had their peaceful moments together. GT got better once they ditched the Black Star Ball Arc. The Baby Arc and Shadow Dragon Arcs where without a doubt the best parts of GT and what it is most fondly remembered for. The Super 17 arc is pretty stupid and boring, other than seeing how the more mature characters act towards the old ones.
Super has definitely some good sagas. The Zamasu saga is by far the best saga between both GT and Super, except for that damn awful ending.
Tournament of Power was okay, but really Really, REALLY overhyped. Plus it gave us the spic canon and Chadhon vs Chadren posting. Besides that Super has two so-so movie recap arcs.
If Super is able to keep delivering it will end up being better than GT, but if it fails or where to get canceled tomorrow, I’d say GT is better, but not by much.

Reading through the manga again, and I feel that the text implies that the Kaioshin was stronger/more durable than rusty gohan. Gohan took 1 hit from Buu and an energy wave and passed out while almost died while Kaioshin was hit 3 times, got kiai'd, but was still conscious and had enough energy left to teleport Gohan.

Kibito and Kaioshin spends the entire arc baffled by how they are weaker than the Saijins.

I guess my complaint is that even though Gohan should be stronger than Kaioshin, the fact that the Supreme Kai was able to stay conscious through the entire Vegeta vs Buu fight(and not get killed in the giant explosions they were throwing around), and then even walk later despite the beating he took makes him look stronger than what Toriyama had probably intended for the character.

Super is shit but it still has some moments that feel like OG and DBZ, though they are few and far between. GT had nothing like that. It was all over-designed garbage or a pathetically failed attempt to recapture the "adventure" feel of OG, except none of the characters did shit or were even likeable, and so Kid Goku was forced to carry everything, which didn't work. Even in OG it wasn't like that because the supporting cast actually did shit. And SS4 is a pile of trash. Combining Oozaru and Super Saiyan was a great idea, and DBS Broly pulled it off well. SS Furshit, on the other hand, looks like an amalgamation of several different ideas that no one could decide on, so they just said "Fuck it" and smashed them all together and then gave it a yellow aura so they could get away with pretending it's a Super Saiyan form.
tl;dr Super is shit but has glimmers of classic DB, GT is just shit.

It was cool when Gohan first used it, but it became completely superfluous after the Cell arc. Visually, there's generally not a distinctive enough difference compared to the previous form. Especially with Vegeta, you can barely tell he's changed at all. It lacks a significant presence as its own unique form.

Excellent. Out of all of Goku's forms, it's the most visually distinctive and makes a huge impact when you first see it. You can tell, just from looking at it, that this is something different from previous forms. Unfortunately, it gets squandered. It's sad how this form ended up.

It's a very visually distinctive form, so in that regard I can't complain about it. What I WILL complain about is how it feels more like a regression than anything. Perhaps that was the point, but the previous Super Saiyan forms, with their golden hair and auras, gave off a feel of divinity, as if they'd surpassed the boundaries of mere mortals. SS4 is like "If I can't win by advancing forward, I'll just have to regress into an ape man!" It's a little disappointing in terms of what it represents. Also, it makes no sense how he gets completely different pants. Also his fur is a different color from his hair. It's a little nonsensical in terms of how it work.s

Honestly, I like it. It's unique in that rather than buffing Goku up like previous forms did, it slims him down, so already it makes a huge yet simultaneously subtle change. Red's a pretty good color as well, though I honestly prefer the gold of previous forms. Overall, it's not bad.

Krillin was more relevant character in Saiyan and Namek arcs than in most DB arcs. Bulma actually only returned to prominence around that point to, after being little more than a background character after Red Ribbon arc. Yamcha was either jobbing or missing parties for the most part of DB anyway. The only characters who actually significantly lost importance during the Z transition were Kame-sennnin (who explicitly reitred near the end of "OG") and Tenshinhan, who still got some moments in Z, just never was a main character again. On the other hand, Piccolo became a major ally and stayed like this through the entirety of Z, Gohan was pretty much the second main character, we also have Vegeta who was our anti-hero ever since Namek. "OG" was the most "Goku time" the franchise has ever been. Seriously, the easy way to see it is counting named villains not defeated by Goku. Namek alone has around the same number of them as everything pre-Z. And in Andrid arc, Goku beats no one.

You really think minor characters fighting mooks that Goku can easily oneshot makes them more relevant? DBZ really hammered down the idea that unless you are a Saiyan or "arc Villain" race. Nobody is copying each others moves in a regular basis or trying to catch up anymore. Honestly after the Frieza arc, nobody but Goku tries anymore. Look at fucking Vegeta, Mr. "I'm not going to learn the Instant Transmission so that I would have an excuse hold Kakarot's hand.". Goku learns to do the Fusion Dance even if he isn't planning to use it himself because it makes him a better martial artist. No one else gives that much a fuck anymore.

Bulma's technology became relevant for the first time since the pirate cave (aside of the dragon radar) too. Even her father (who once a gag character for one chapter in "OG") got to contribute.

Throughout the android arc everyone makes an attempt at getting stronger though it's true human give up half-way through. But the strongest character on the heroes team changes constantly, even Piccolo holds the title for a while. And Goku took a year to learn the IT, plus, Vegeta is not a martial artist, he's all about power, not technique. I agree that as the time went, people in general get less creative and more power-based (excluding Buu gimmicks), but it is true for Goku too. Side characters were more relevant in "Z" than "OG", it's simply obvious.

Goku arbitrarily is the only person in the main cast that knows either the Kaio-ken, the Spirit Bomb, or the Instant Transmission. Maybe because DBZ shifted the show to be more like a superhero show than an adventure/martial arts comic.

Your mother became more contrived. Goku's virus was the whole basis of the android arc and it's what allowed Vegeta and Piccolo to have their fights in the initial stages of the arc (even Gohan got a moment there). Then Goku was simply too weak and this got Piccolo a chance to fight #17. Stopping Cell initially was also something only Tenshinhan could do due to how broken Shin Kikoho is. Then he's training when Vegeta and Trunks take over. And really none of those are padding, some of them have crucial development for the characters. The only instance when he could just IT'd somewhere is Trunks vs Cold and Freeza.

The whole cheater thing is the biggest headcannon in the entire franchise, there was literally no instances and/or evidence of him cucking Bulma, hell, I don't even remember if it was outright said in the Cell arc.
I can see the design choice to be on purpose however, Gohan then got a very similar design only for him to job against Buu, but even then, Yamcha has had a fuckton of different designs throughout the entirety of DB.

Agreed and it marked the pinnacle of the series. Now its been reduced from a mythic form that almost no Saiyans could achieve to basically a nothing power up thrown in for all Saiyans or partial Saiyans. The Freeza arc really should have been the end of the series.

I always thought that was because Earthlings and Namekians have "Analog" Power levels while Aliens have "Digital" power levels.
Take 2 of them with a Power level of 18.000
The Earthling can go from 0 to 18.000 while the Alien can be either 15.000 while resting or 18.000 while going all out.
To get the 18.000 the Earthling is the only one who knows how to get all the power from his body. The aliens simply use their raw power to get their strength

the Cell arc as a whole got very repetitive and was clearly mishandled. for all the criticisms leveled at the buu arc, i dont really see the cell arc get the same ones even though it deserves it in some areas. the arc wasnt planned out, swapped endgame antagonists three times and even swapped protags. and all while still feeling like just more of the same stuff weve seen. and coming right off the namek arc, it was kind of disappointing that was the case, imho

Some of this probably comes from Trunks popularity and the fact that people generally consider android/cyborg monsters to be cooler than bubble gum monsters. But Cell arc, for all it's stupid twists and turns actually got everyone some sort of satisfying conclusion. Kuririn gets a waifu (it's only fully confirmed in Buu arc, but implications are strong), Gohan realizes his true potential, Vegeta grows a heart, Bulma settles down with him and gets a kid (and kinda truly grows up), Piccolo and Kami fuse (though they don't achieve too much), Dende becomes a new earth guardian, Trunks saves his timeline and Goku dies. The only true satisfying ending in Buu saga is for Vegeta and Satan. Gohan and kids basically repeat Piccolo from Cell arc but worse (since they became actual power ups for the big bad and they don't produce the sense of finality the fusion did), Goku just kinda comes back to life without major changes to his character, Shin and Kibito are non-characters no one gives a shit about and everyone else is just kinda there.

i dont really think thats true. the changes arent extremely pronounced, but i do think that him being dead gave him a better appreciation for his family and friends. you can see that hes taking buu a lot more seriously than he did with cell.

i always thought that was because dende was still alive so he had to keep the dragon balls working so they could bring everyone back. either that or they were too far away.
