Release order is key. In other words Fate/Stay Night (VN) -> Fate Hollow Ataraxia (VN) -> Fate/Zero(LN/Anime). From there on you can read/watch in whatever order you like.

I generally don't spend 100 hours reading books unless there's double digit numbers of them or enormous pagecounts a volume.

Fate is like 60 hours. Lord of the Rings takes about 40 hours to finish even if you're slow. It is longer

But it is, word count, line count, however you want to do it.

Most VNs are between 30-50 hours. Fate is nothing special in that regard. You can finish it in under 40 if you're not a slow reader and use a guide to optimize your playthrough (i.e. not having to get to dead end and replaying certain parts of the same route)

Most people would say the visual novel. Having read it myself, it's a pretty damn big waste of time, unless you're already into the series, or already like Visual Novels in general.

Watch Zero, then Unlimited Blade Works, then Heaven's Feel. You're entirely missing the Fate route if you do that, but Zero fills in 90% of the reasons to experience Fate first anyway. And unfortunately, there is no good version of the Fate route that's newcomer-friendly.

If you're hungry for more after that, read the visual novel. Realta Nua version. And when you're done that, read Hollow Ataraxia.

Zero is far worse than the Fate route though.

It's pretty damn easy to understand, past the first episode. Even then, the biggest thing to watch out for is remembering people's names, because I've seen the timeskips throw people off enough that they though Kiritsugu, Kirei, and Kariya were the same guy.

Fate has a grand total of one good moment, as far as things the other routes don't do better. And Zero coming first only spoils a couple things in Fate and Heaven's Feel.

Its different with Gundam. The Fate VN would be like watching early UC so you can understand the basics since there things like Saber clones and Char clones and the concepts of Servants/Mobile Suits. While all of Fate isn't super connected, you have characters who pop up in other series, like Astolfo in Apocrypha and Extella Link.

Well, yeah, parts are inevitably going to be spoiled. But either Zero spoils Stay Night, or Stay Night spoils Zero. But they still both have a lot to enjoy.

I only suggest Zero first because Heaven's Feel should absolutely not be first, and Zero explains more about the world up-front than Unlimited Blade Works does.

Not really The VN only lightly mentions the 4th grail war, no solid details. Zero was written years after the VN came out so its expected to be familiar with Fate before you read it anyways.

Fate isn't a straightforward read through, there's lots of content, and I also think that length is for the three individual stories compiled together.

It absolutely does. You know what the aftermath of the final battle will be. You know who's going to survive. You know what happens to Kiritsugu, Iri, Illya, Tokiomi, Aoi, Rin, Sakura, and Kirei.

Exploring how things get there is interesting, but you know exactly where it's going to end up, and it's a lot more interesting when you don't.

Zero LN came out in 2005 parallel to HA.

Fate in it's entirety is literally like 900k words long.

F/SN -> F/HA.
Fate/Zero if you want to see a war fought by trained adults who somehow managed to break the Masquerade way worse than a bunch of ignorant highschoolers ever did.
Prism Illya is the magical girl spinoff, and is the secret Illya route.
F/GO is its own alternate dimension where original Fate material doesn't matter because Nasu sold out.

Zero (at least the LN) is built on the idea that you have read SN and know the ending. That‘s why they treat stuff like Saber‘s identity or the Sakura plot like nombig deal even though they’re major plot twists in FSN and also why the ending is so confusing for people who don‘t know FSN.

Apocrypha LN is actually pretty good. Flawed but actually not as bad as I thought it was with how much shitters play up it's flaws. Anime adaption is horrendous outside of fights and even those are pretty butchered. A-1 literallu cut 80% of the shit that actually could have made it good.

Zero is a tragedy, the fact that you know it ends badly is the whole point

And there are things that FSN treats like no big deal, when it's a really big deal if you watch Zero first. Like, the entirety of Zero's aftermath.

And like said, there's definitely some things that are intentionally left out of the UBW and HF anime because they're already covered in Zero. Like what the deal is between Saber and Gil. Or Saber's reaction to seeing Illya at the church.

To be fair. Even if you don't know what's going to happen, it's VERY easy to figure out this story is not going to have a happy ending. Like, Kiritsugu's entire goal is kind of obviously doomed from the start.

I made this point half a dozen times already, but starting with Zero will give you the wrong idea about what Fate is about. You will expect more stories in the (pretty unique) style of Urobuchi, which no other work in the Franchise can deliver. Starting with the VN or even ufotable-UBW will give you a far better idea of the style of storytelling most Fate works have (which are either written by Nasu, supervised by Nasu or at least inspired by Nasu‘s style)

Frankly, I would argue that starting with a anime already gives you the wrong idea. Fate is a video game franchise first and foremost.

While this is certainly possible, the likelihood of people catching on to the significance of things like the Dead Ends is already so slim on a first read it probably doesn't make much of a difference. However, experiencing the story out of order is doomed to cause this problem, so the 2006 series is an okay way to test the waters for people with poor attention spans.

Also the romance of inhuman girl meets boy was done better in Fate compared to Tsuki with Arc and Saber. I was talking specifically about FSN, but you want to talk about sues when you bring up Tohno Shiki. The real bitch magnet in KnK is Kokutou while Shiki really only gets Enjou and that ends up being revealed not be really true. Meanwhile Tohno is drowning in woman for no goddamn reason. His sister and the maids make sense, Arc is Arc so she may pass, but Ciel, Sion, Satsuki, and every other girl want his dick for any minor interaction. Most of the real mystery of Tsuki comes in the latter half while it feels more spread out in KnK with Araya also being a player in the background.

Well, that's the way I've interpreted and choose to use it rather than ascribing it to push that just because something's older is that it's better like most on here do. I don't have my head that far up my own ass...yet. And hopefully no time soon.

Arc's route is straightforward and simple, I wouldn't say it has any glaring flaws aside from massive info dumps that are sort of a necessary evil for the tons of later aspects that are crucial to the story(kind of why despite generally not liking FSN route that much I give it a pass. Ciel's is honestly pretty bad for a number of reason but has plenty of great moments that shouldn't I cant completely discredit, and I honestly can't see why you'd say Kohaku's is bad so elaborate on that for me. Kokutou makes sense since abnormal are attracted to his 'peaceful nature'. Ryougi is an asshole but I mostly refer to every character she interacts with going on about how beautiful and flawless she is constantly even when she's fighting them. Azaka even does this and she's supposed to be antagonistic. Meanwhile Ciel is attracted to Shiki for the same reason abnormal people are attracted to Kokutou being attracted to his peaceful nature and a longing to have a normal life with someone she wasn't able to have. Sion only likes Shiki because he's literally the first and only boy she's gotten to know. Sacchin just imprinted on him after he saved her once and it's even portrayed to be an unhealthy obsession.
As for the mystery, lets just agree to disagree because for me the mystery of Tsukihime was handled much better than KNK did as there's plenty of little clues sprinkled here and there that are recontextualized when you go back and notice them while in KNK it really felt like Araya just sort of came out of left field with very minor hints of his antics but it's decently handled I'll admit. My proble is mainly with Ryougi's murder-mystery and how Lio just pops up with no clues to how relevant he's supposed to be by then.

It felt incredibly rushed and unfulfilling to me. We get the the build up to her route and the end of Hisui's to get a rushed conclusion. Her character also plays a part. She has her cheerful side that is the mask to her true feelings, which end up being feelings of revenge for what was done to her. Only its revealed that she doesn't really want revenge as shes simply doing it because that's what someone in her position should do. Felt very unfulfilling for the instigator of the whole SHIKI deal. Then we just sort of jump forward to a field of sunflowers and things are over. Not really terrible but I could just feel how rushed this was. Had a couple cute moments though.

FGO is on Aniplex and Delightworks, the anime is on Aniplex, the games are on XSeed/Marvelous, the manga are on whoever has licensed them.
