Is it really just a poor mans Utena?

Not only does it not try to be Shitena, it also is a) animated and b) has strong sound directing. Comparing it to Utena does nothing but show people that you need to watch more anime.

More like utena is poor man's starlight

Not really, it has its own goals which are completely different from Utena's. Their similarities are superficial.

Pay no attention to these idiots. Utena is leaps and bounds better than this shit show.

The difference is that nobody wants to self-insert as Utena characters whereas half of Revue Starlight fans are women who want to be Maya or Claudine.

Delusional cuckold

I didn't even imply otherwise. But it's nice to see the Ikuhara defense force is still out. Surprised you people still exist, given the trainwreck that was Sarazanmai. But I guess people who lack a personality of their own will always have to flock to something.

>poor mans Utena
No, way too generous.
It's Love Live with swordfights.

>It's Love Live with swordfights
Whats wrong with that? Why do people hate Love Live so much?

>Ikuhara defense force
No need to project, Anonymous. I don't give a shit about Ikuhara's other works. I'm here to talk about Utena in comparison to Starlight.

>I am here to talk about two works that share no noteworthy similarities whatsoever
Yep, the mental capacity I expect from someone who thinks highly of Ikuhara's works.

Far better finale than Utena.

>>I am here to talk about two works that share no noteworthy similarities whatsoever
The comparison between the two is literally the premise of this thread and what the two posts I replied to were referencing.

But even that aside, the premise of your greentext is nonsense as the director of Starlight was pretty much Ikuhara's understudy and worked with him on Penguindrum and YKA.

Fuck this. I don't know why I'm wasting my time with you.

>The comparison between the two is literally the premise of this thread
It isn't. The premise of the thread is OP asking whether or not they are similar. The answer to that question is "no". Further debate misses the point of the posed question. I wouldn't expect any less from Ikuhara's fanbase.
>director of Starlight was pretty much Ikuhara's understudy and worked with him on Penguindrum and YKA.
I guess Neon Genesis Evangelion is literally Nausicaa and Char's Counter Attack then, given how Anno worked on all three. It hurts.

Worse than Utena and Penguindrum, better than YKA and Sarazanmai. Great soundtrack too.

No, it doesn't have that much in common.

>both shows explore a character complexity with a member of its cast each episode
>the main character is summoned to compete against that character
>each competition features a song that highlights the theme of the battle
>repetition and repeating timelines
>the friend character betrays the main character at the end
>not that much in common

There's so much wrong here, I am starting to doubt you've actually seen either show. The main character is summoned to compete? In Revue Starlight? Where 70% of the episodes focus on side cast members and Nana vs. Hikari, or Futaba vs. Kaoruko receive multiple episodes? Yikes.

Also forgot to mention that both main characters partake in weird side battles that are related to the schools they attend and aim to be the top while not knowing what being the top actually means.

You have to be literally retarded to not see the similarities between Utena and Starlight.

You also have to be literally retarded to make that list. Or, you know, not have seen either show.

I could never bring myself to finish it, but it's not bad. Its similarities to Ikuhara's work do bring it down a bit though.

Dropped this shit 3 episodes in. Some of the most lifeless, vapid characters I've ever seen.

Karen audition fights in in like 8 of 12 episodes and reaches the end. Yeah, its not every single episode like in Utena (even though Utena doesnt even fight every single episode). Thats why its called a similarity, you autistic retard. Utena also focused heavily on side characters but the main focus was always on Utena/Anthy, just like Starlight is Karen/Hikari. Being in common doesnt mean its a 1:1 copy, moron.

>not that much in common
Indeed, not much in common. Do you think enumerating superficial and large-scale similarities without taking into account each show's themes or goals supports your point? You have named literally nothing of substance.

Maybe, in character design.
>nobody wants to self-insert as Utena characters
But similarities between characters and RL people can be found with ease.

>no brown girls
Into the trash it goes.
