Generally speaking, low quality translation comes from the quality of the writing and the translation, very rarely from localisation. The few works that are spoiled by localisation tend to be intended for very young children in the first place, where that kind of heavy-handed approach makes sense.

What merit does leaving these things untranslated accomplish? You might garner the appreciation of some smug EOPs who have been watching anime for a whole decade and think they're hot shit because they can pick out "いただきます". I agree that the currency conversion is a small thing, which would probably be done in other languages as well. But translation in other languages usually preserves much more from the original culture and language. Being faithful to the source text is what is seen as good translation. For some reason English language translation of literature has always had a history of localizing a lot because they thought readers would not care about different cultures and languages. In other words, they wanted the end product to be something you could just as easily read as if it took place in England and the characters spoke English. Anime/manga translation by English speakers sometimes follows that trend, but others think as much as Japanese culture as possible should be preserved, because they are inherent to the Japanese works. As far as I know, translation to English is unique in that regard and I prefer more faithful translations myself.

The problem is that you're comparing some acclaimed novels to fucking TV shows and comics. Obviously, a footnote about the history of the country during the period the work was written isn't going to be a good fit for dialogue that blitzes by.

What you should be comparing the translation work to is stuff in the same category. Stuff like your countries dub of The Simpsons. I don't know why weebs seem to think there's some innate mysticality to Japan, or that an entertainment product should have some kind of educational element first and foremost.

Culture is not the same as language.

This is a difference in views between translators. Translation is not just about language. It is also about taking in account the intended audience, and the translator's preferences. While one translator would choose for a Japanese family to say itadakimasu before dinner, and have a footnote explaining its significance, another would have the family say a prayer and move on. There is no right or wrong. There is always a balance to be made between creating a readable text, and a 100% faithful translation. I'm just saying that English works, be it on TV or in literature, are localized more than translations for speakers of other languages.

Currency isn't units. There is no USD equivalent for a unit of JPY. A foot is exact 30.48 cm everywhere. One JPY is however many USD you can get someone to trade with you for.

Which makes currency localization even more awkward since JPY to USD rate changes every day.

I am going to say that if you are watching Japanese anime, you are dealing with something foreign to the Anglosphere experience. The translation should feel foreign to the Anglo audience.

My rule of thumb is that 1 yen = 1 cent (which generally works with euros and dollars, though it's not a 100% accurate conversion). So if an anime mentions that a gym membership is 3500 yen a month, I know that's roughly 35 euros/dollars a month and I can say "wow, that's kinda on the expensive side!".

The 'main' measurement of metric is the meter, which during the French Revolution was defined as one 10 millionth of the distance between the equator and the poles, but has recently been more accurately redefined as the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 seconds. Meanwhile every imperial unit is defined in metric terms. For example: a foot is defined as 0.3048 meters, while a yard is defined as 0.9144 meters. That's right: these imperial metrics are defined in meters. It's also very telling that it needs to use metric measurements in order to become palpable for accurate calculations, whereas prior to standardization it had such inaccurate definitions as "the distance between the nose and thumb of a certain king".

To be fair, the localization tries to "fix" the mistake of letting the translation take place in L.A. by making it an alternative universe L.A. where for some reason Japanese culture managed to heavily influence and blend with the local culture. That's because later games included elements so distinctively Japanese that they couldn't be handwaved.

It's a good enough approximation for narrative purposes. You generally only care about orders of magnitude, and the difference between 5km and 500km has more or less the same implicationd as 5 miles to 500 miles.

Personally I convert it as 1.6km to a mile or 0.6 miles to a km though, and I've spent enough time interacting with mutts to have a good intuition for imperial units like feet and pounds.
