Been lifting for as long as this show's been airing, and my muscles are getting more defined. I don't know how many more months it'll take before I look like a god or have abs, but there's only one way to find out.

I already have. liked working out in gym class in highschool, started hitting the gym in uni, but commuter college plus midterms always killed my free time so I never really made it a habit. Lately however my office installed a gym so I've started hitting it again after not lifting in about 1.5 years (if you count stocking shelfs with big box items and moving bricks onto carts etc) or 3 years (if you only count going to an actual gym)

Diets only matter in changing the look of your body in that you require the correct diet to lose, gain, or maintain your weight. You're never gonna gain any muscle if all you do is lose weight without actually exercising and gaining that weight back as muscle afterwards unless you're some kind of genetic freak or use steroids.

It's mostly exercise, but I guess it depends on what you consider a decent body.
Certain specific things, like being able to have an 8 pack instead of a 6 pack are almost entirely genetic though.

pushups, incline / decline pushups, twist crunches, leg raises, squats, walking squats, pull ups, calf raises, planks, incline / decline planks, mountain climbers. that's all i can think of right now. just set up a routine that hits each muscle / muscle group twice and work up to 3 sets of 10 for each workout. so hit biceps with 2 workouts doing 3 sets of 10 for each workout for example.

count your calories. you should eat at a deficit so around 1800 cal a day to lose weight. also adding in working out of any aspect will make the process much better and reduce saggy skin. with working out, you'll probably look like a beast after 50 pounds of weight loss. you have full control of your life and are perfectly capable of making it, it's up to you to decide to do it though. that defeatest attitude will get you nowhere.

The good news is you don't cut fat through cardio.
Just lift weights and as your muscles use up more energy you'll eventually lose the fat. You can speed this up by making meal changes.
Cardio is good for heart health and breathing, but if it isn't for you diet and breathing exercises will do most of the same thing.

Target different areas of your pectoral muscles with a mix of various exercises. General for your "upper" chest you're going to want to go for lifts that involve vertical movements from an angled position (Barbell/Dumbbell Inclines, Elevated Pushups, Bench Press, etc). For your "lower" chest generally you're going to want to do horizontal movements as well as some angled positions opposite of what you do for your "upper" chest (Barbell/Dumbbell Decline, Dumbbell/Machine Flys, Dips, etc).

In addition, you need to consider your overall dietary needs. If you're higher in body fat, the surest way to have more defined muscles is, of course, to lose body fat. However if you're trying to build up muscle, you can't try to "build" (Being in an anabolic state) while simultaneously trying to "lose" (Being in a catabolic state). Personally it's easier to build up muscle first and then cut the weight, but you can try to lose excess weight first and go from there.

Regardless, your macros should be filled mostly with lean meats, low GI carbs such as vegetables and moderate whole grains, some fats to keep you full. If you can get at a minimum of .5 grams of protein for every pound you weigh, you're in a good spot. If you can match 1 for 1, that's best but difficult (And perennially dangerous) to do long term.

This doesn't mean much. For all I know, you could be eating only two full meals per day and still consume less than your required daily calorie intake. It's much easier to bulk by eating more (smaller) meals a day with snacks in between. Protein powder is useless if you have sufficient protein intake, but it's useful if you struggle to consume enough protein. It doesn't hurt to take slightly more protein than your body needs, so worst case scenario, you'll only waste money.

Started going to the gym at the start of summer. No real weight loss, but definitely an increase in stamina + endurance.

You can do progressions (googling will give you a bunch of charts and whatnot).

You start with doing them against a wall or on your knees. Then once you can do so many, you can move on to regular pushups.

Learn2progression. If you can't do standard form of any exercise, start with an easier or assisted version. For push ups, this means wall push-up -> incline push-up -> knee push-up -> standard push-up.

It will be more difficult for you to achieve a lower body fat and higher levels of lean muscle mass due to the fact that your testosterone levels are likely beginning to lower (This helps increase the rate of your metabolism, recovery, energy, etc) but it's still possible to achieve an "ideal" body.

Most likely yes. Depending on your age (For reasons mentioned above) your basal metabolism rate is likely around 2200-2500 calories per day. On days you're training, you're likely burning a substantial amount as well (But that depends on exactly what kind of training you do and at what intensity).

You generally want to be no lower in long term weight loss than 500 calories than what your body is burning throughout the day, or else your metabolism actually slows and will attempt to more or less hang onto every calorie it gets.

On another note, just because you consume "x" amount of calories doesn't mean weight loss. 500 calories is much different than 500 calories of M&Ms. Ensure you're hitting proper macro goals, as I mentioned in a previous reply.

In the manga it does come up from time to time. But it's just a background trait, not a main element of some multi-volume subplot or whatever. In the end Danberu is just a fitness themed slice of life.

Depending on your needs, I wouldn't say it'd be terrible to put time in lifting. Focus on lifts that will benefit you the most in your marathon in terms of muscle such as your quads, glutes, hip flexors, lower lumbar, etc. Core lifts would include squats, deadlifts, good mornings, front squats, hip flexor machines, etc. Take care to do plenty of dynamic stretching as well. However don't forget to include low intensity cardio work in as well for at a minimum of 30 minutes. Jumping rope, rows, and swimming are some of my personal recommendations, but train however you seem to prefer.

Also, increase your low GI carb consumption to ensure your muscles are going to be filled with enough glycogen to power you through your workouts. Don't forget lean protein as well as proper rest between workouts.

Oh, I am lifting but more in endurance direction with 15 reps 3 sets.
I started working out again since like last November and despite forced to take a break for like 2 months I made great advances.
Right now I reduced my weight from 108 to 95 (1.90m) and I run around 15 kilometers, probably can do 20 if I need to.
I fear though, because I have difficulty with losing weight, eating more even if mostly protein I won't get rid of the rest of the fat. Loosing weight is always difficult for my body. I have no proper scale for it but I think around 5 kilo of unnecessary fat remain.

By rights I should hate the shit out of myself, being totally unable to kick my binge-eating habit no matter what I try, but even without any gym in my area simply waving weights around at home for an hour a day five times a week and using my cheapo exercise bike at my standing desk makes me feel human.

Don't fall for the high rep meme for core lifts. Stay under 8 reps, preferably with 3-5 sets, to actually build muscle tissue. Anything above those rep amounts will indeed help break down tissue outside of the actual muscle tissue, but you're not going to get anything in terms of either strength or size gains out of them.

In terms of macros, I'd try to approximate your BMR and get a feel for if you have room for extra calories. If you're trying to either maintain your weight or lose some, don't expect to get any muscular gains. I'd suggest if you're trying to get the most out of your training, increase your macros. You might gain weight, but if done correctly it will be in lean muscle mass. From there you can always cut excess weight once you're content with your strength goals.
As has been stated before, you can't gain lean muscle mass while your body is actively trying to break itself down due to being in a caloric deficit. Your best bet is to attempt to do what's known as a "clean bulk". Granted this is less effective if you're not doing core lifts such as bench press, deadlift, squats, etc, but you'll still be able to achieve some lean muscle mass. As stated previously, yes you will likely gain some weight. But the goal should be replacing fat with lean muscle mass, and due to muscle tissues (And all the other supporting tissue) being more dense than fat, you don't have to worry about the weight gain.

As for cardiovascular exercises, a jump rope is easily the best and cheapest answer. If you can afford it as well as find someone to properly show you how to properly throw punches and kicks, a heavy bag is my personal favorite tool for cardio work.

It's generally accepted that high repetitions will result in sarcoplasmic hypertrophy (The tissue besides muscle fibers) while lower repetitions results in myofibrillar hypertrophy (The actual muscle fibers). SH will indeed increase muscular volume, but will not actually increase strength goals. Should you be cutting and you reduce your water retention, you'll have more defined muscles should you go with the latter option rather than the former.

On a side note, most bikers that have these "tree trunks" will generally actually have varying degrees of intensity based on the gears they ride in, the speed they ride, and the terrain they ride. Ever notice that professional bikers tend to train in areas with different levels of elevation?

Training Volume does indeed mean Repetitions x Load (Generally considered weight). Higher training volumes certainly increase hypotrophy. However, it's much easier to hit higher training volumes through moderate repetitions that high. For example, take a typical back squat. Let's say your goal is to achieve a total volume of 1000 lbs. Consider your options below:

Each set is technically achieving the same training volume. However, when performing multiple sets, there is a certain point to which muscular fatigue can become an issue. Take for example the 12 rep. Imagine doing 5 sets worth of this, or a total of 60 reps. While it's possible, between the difficulty due to fatigue in addition to the time needed is much greater than what would be needed for the lower repetition sets. Additionally, more repetitions result in more chances for injury to occur, especially when fatigue sets in. Does this become an issue in controlled lifts via machines or cardio? Not necessarily. But in more complex lifts, this becomes a major issue.

In addition, there have been a multitude of studies that support the hypothesis that lower rep sets increase overall muscular hypertrophy. I can link them if needed.

Start working toward 1 hour/day with 30 minutes on a rower and 30 minutes doing weights/ab workouts, which is what I do. Initially you will take a lot of breaks, but that is okay. You can do the weights/ab workouts at home with cheap equipment, and go to a gym for the rower if you can't afford one or don't have space.
I stopped doing anything physically demanding at age 22 when I finished college, 6'3" and 130lbs. I remained at almost that exact weight for nine years, but what little muscle I had turned into a very thin layer of fat because I didn't do any physical work at all and walked maybe a quarter mile on average each day. I had a steady diet of ramen, chocolate, potato chips, pizza, and ice cream. I probably had less than five healthy meals each year between ages 18 and 31. When I finally got around to working out about 18 months ago, I had the same problem you do with feeling like I was going to vomit. So what I did is I started buying ensure, the weight gain bottle thing, in bulk. I would drink one of those and each a small amount of food a bit before going to exercise, and then when I got home after I showered I would feel hungry, and that's when I would shovel as many fruits/veggies/chicken into my mouth as I could handle. Eventually I worked my way up to what's got to be close to 4k calories/day. It took longer to build up my tolerance to food than it did to build up my endurance at the gym, and it was obviously the lack of calories that was slowing me down.
Just eat enough to have the energy to go work out and you'll gradually build up the ability to eat more.
