It's really awkward how you have to pretend they're not speaking the same language in this episode when they are, makes the whole thing a bit weird to take in.

It's not weird, it's common to fake what languages historical people spoke for the sake of the audience. In this case having both English and Danes speak Japanese.
Like with the recent TV series Chernobyl, if they cared about accuracy the actors would be speaking Russian, but they don't.

It's not weird at all. That is the correct way to do it. The narrative's language which is the language the story is told to the audience in is entirely different from the in-universe language the characters are speaking.
Forgetting the basic rule of fiction results in garbage like Kilngon or gibberish with subtitles when if the setting has fantasy languages.

It is incredibly rare to have two individuals speaking English on screen when they're supposed to be speaking two different languages. It's almost never done. The point of shooting a scene like this is to illustrate the communication gap. Instead this anime just said fuck it let's have em talk for 3 minutes before we even say he doesn't understand them.

Again, the narrative isn't part of the universe. When a narrator speaks a voice over effectively talking to the audience, it doesn't actually happen in the fictional universe, yet no one questions it since it's an established part of storytelling.
Remember when in Ghost in the Shell live-action, when Beat Takeshi spoke in Japanese while ScarJo replied in English? Both actors just spoke in their native tongues without anyone stuttering or butchering a language they don't speak. It's not lazy, the assumption that audience are dumb and can't keep up and have to see the characters speak explicitly differently to be able to understand they're speaking different languages is much more retarded.

Old English is based off a specific German dialect, Ostfriesien, which is linguistically more like Dutch than Hochdeutsch spoken today.

No, it's not an orange. Because in both situations to attempt accuracy or at least differentiation, you'd have to have an actor or a seiyuu speak a language they don't speak, which is the main point of all that.
You'd have to have either Thorfinn's seiyuu or the women's butcher English or Danish. The main advantage of not trying to sync the narrative, is not butchering languages in a cringe worthy way.

How about not speaking in riddles? If you mean the audience aren't supposed to understand what the character is saying by design, that doesn't make my point any less right. I'm not talking about the intention of the dialogue, I've only brought that example up for the one reason that neither of them spoke another language.
Unless you have a way to differentiate the situation that doesn't involve seiyuu's stuttering through another language, it doesn't mater.

A heavily mutated Dutch, but if you squint when listening to Old English you can see resemblances to modern Dutch, like you occasionally can with German. I will say that the Dutch of today sounds closer to the German of today than Old English sounds of Dutch today, though, there's been massive lingual drift since Old English was a spoken language. Old English is more like a Creole version of Ostfriesien than anything else, really, and it got really messy when the Vikings smushed Old Danish into it and the Normans assfucked French into it.
