Boogiepop

I'm reading through the LNs, right now in the middle of VS Imaginator Part 1 and I think that the LN readers overplayed the importance of the things the anime cut out. So far the only gripes I can find comparing the anime and LNs are some pointless changes like leaving out Kei standing off against Masami with Nagi's stun baton or Echoes return beam being a lot weaker than how it's described in the book. In the VS Imaginator arc what I didn't like is that they shortened the scene with Suiko and her friend and that they made Jin's treatment of the thugs in the alley more justified. But besides that the 2019 anime still feels faithful to its source material, more faithful than legit shit adaptations like Tokyo Ghoul, Berserk(2017), etc. Kamishiro's side boyfriend added nothing to the first novel besides development for her and some adult Touka bits and his role was served perfectly well by Kamishiro herself in ep 2 in her conversation with Nagi. Really what the show needed was a few more eps to expand the first arc so that it wouldn't be the main rough spot of the show. But in spite of that I really liked the new adaptation and I'm enjoying the novels and they co-exist perfectly as two different canons in my mind.

Most of us think anime was fine aside from the first arc.
Also s2 never

An adaption can never measure up to what you imagine while reading the books, I found the anime perfectly fine.
Just a shame we'll never get more books.
Also at the same time sad and glad they skipped vol 4

eh, the 90s anime was better.

she cute.....

>the 2019 anime still feels faithful to its source material
They cut I Wish You Heaven. The 2019 adaptation is soulless, surprising given the staff, but soulless nonetheless. If you think it was a faithful adaptation, you're probably a teenager who wants to get straight to the action from the team who brought you OPM, everything which made the OG emotional and healthy with social and political commentary notwithstanding.

...which I suppose isn't a problem. There's a reason they cut I Wish You Heaven and even the entire In The Mirror novel and went directly into At Dawn to save Overdrive for the finale; their target audience wasn't the light novel's target audience, it was kids and teens (likely like yourself) who just like the idea of a dark urban fantasy without having a single care for the beating heart behind it.

And the character designs are criminal.[spoiler/]

Attached: 87656789765.png (402x635, 297K)

Boogie's kinda cute, in a goofy poofy way.

>liking unfaithful character designs

Adaptation was worth it for Aoi Yuuki alone.

This. I cannot believe how butchered the adaptation was given Madhouse's only competent team being responsible for it. There's so much effort put into scenes you wouldn't put effort into if you didn't are about the source material, so why was the script so wrong in every way?

sakugabooru.com/data/89a1d1aa936ceed0cfa630ac4a2407b4.mp4

It was great as a tone piece, but the narrative wasn't really there. Granted, it was an anime original story, so it's not like they were trying to progress the story, but the theming wasn't strong enough to hold the entire show.

>he prefers the old character designs
At some point your taste is just wrong.
Also King of Distortion is the far better ending point than At Dawn

Phantomfags are old, dumb and useless faggots.
They didn't even translate a thing. So much for being fans.

?? I was complaining about the character designs. They look like ass. I said they're "criminal." Just so you know, criminal things are usually considered negative.

Attached: 6789765.png (637x971, 244K)

>muh soulless
Good joke

Better than the long awaited flashback which brings a finalizing, cathartic end to both Suema and Nagi's character arcs and answers all the fans questions about the origin of Suema's obsession and Nagi and Boogiepop's relationship after years of slow teasing???

Yeah, remember what I said about being a teenager only wanting action?

>he doesn't know about the designs
Suspicious

I mean, I just use it as a dumb buzzword, but you get the point.

Soulless = They didn't care about the facets of the source material most pivotal to what made it what it was and just adapted what they thought was cool/what would sell.

>implying 2019 was made for shounenfags and they would last for more than a few episodes

They even got his two form mechanics right iirc

>The 2019 adaptation is soulless, surprising given the staff,
On the contrary from the character animation to the soundtrack to the direction of certain scenes I would say that the new one is full of "soul".
>everything which made the OG emotional and healthy with social and political commentary notwithstanding
That's in the 2019 anime as well just delivered with more subtlety.
>Better than the long awaited flashback which brings a finalizing, cathartic end to both Suema and Nagi's character arcs and answers all the fans questions about the origin of Suema's obsession and Nagi and Boogiepop's relationship after years of slow teasing???
The way I see it is At Dawn in the anime is the conclusion to Nagi's arc while King of Distortion's wraps up this series by tying back to the first arc, they compliment each other perfectly that way.

>madhouse will most likely make overlord 4 and not boogiepop season 2

Also boogiepop fanarts died again I think.

The action has nothing to do with it, you dimwit. Overdrive is the best stopping point because Boogie gets focus. In at Down he barely appears.

Imagine my surprise when I learned that the sash and the chains were a lie. Were the belts a lie too?

>He was shorter than me and dressed in a long, black cape with a collar that wrapped around him like a great coat, and a black hat like a shrunken pipe or a top hat without a brim. The hat was a size too big for his head, and half covered his eyes.
>On the hat and cape bits of metal gleamed, like rivets or some sort of badge, sewn along the hem. It gave off the impression of armor.
Another case of dishonesty, unfortunately

>boogie was just large ass black pipe

I feel like the only scene that comes close to justifying the adaption is the confrontation between Kei, Shiro, and Boogie in the last episode. The expressions, voicework, and OST really made it stand out, but even that scene seemed weakened for the ways it deviated from the source.
In the LN, Shiro draws them into an illusion in which they are on two opposing cliffs separated by a chasm. The symbolism should be obvious, he is cutting himself off from them. Boogie then walks out over the chasm despite being warned about any damage being real. Again, the emotion behind the action should be clear.
The anime's floating over the city substitute looks nice and Shiro's fall was great, but I can't help feeling that it would have been better to follow the LN here.

Over all, the adaption was decent, barring the embarrassing fuckup of the first volume, but filled with deviations that brought it down (cutting "present" Nagi storyline from At Dawn) and missed opportunities to improve on weaknesses of the LN (the climax of VS Imaginator is a clusterfuck and several characters were underdeveloped compared to that fat bastard).

I like to delude myself into believing that they skipped In the Mirror so that it could be adapted as an OVA. It makes a great stand alone story and the hyper violence would get axed from a TV release.

My only complain is that when Touka met Scarecrow in the backyard of the crematory, the adaptation didn't mention Touka was there because the funeral of a relative of hers was taking place there. In the novel that was a detail that stood out to me because it meant Touka had being surrounded by death that day, and I personally think that's what drew her over the edge and gave birth to Boogiepop.

I’ve finished reading that some days ago
Sad they didn’t adapt it but I understand why they didn’t

It still hurts that the omnibus editions hardly sold so Seven Seas isn't looking at any more. The translator has openly said on twitter that he wants to do more.

It’s weird because I see a lot of people requesting more on twitter
Looks like Seven seas only cares about Yuri and isekai now

It's a company, if it doesn't sell enough they won't put out more.
It's a sad reality.

>hardly sold
Nah, Seven Seas just don't care. They probably don't have a plan to get more from the beginning.

Yes I'm sure it made them a lot of money and they just decided to not make more money by continuing the tl

Definitely a masterpiece. I personally think Peppermint Wizard is one of the greatest novels written in Japanese in the late 90s, regardless of genre.

Is there some boogie screentime

Eventually
It's fucked how both the official translations and the anime stop at the same point makes completed rewatches even more painful since it becomes a loop unless you know moonrunes

Hey at least there's in the mirror

Unfortunately, his/her role is small.
In a nutshell, the story focuses on the glory and failure of an innocent upstart and it is, I guess, a type of story that Americans might like, although maybe somewhat prejudiced.
I could say its the boogiepop version of Great Gatsby.

I will buy english version soon, although have original novels. so is that okay?

Her character is as unique as reaper.

Are there instances where Boogie is cautious and cannot just cut whatever threat he caought up with?

Company execs make bone-headed decisions all the time, leaving money on the table through their lack of common sense. The Boogiepop brand can't grow if they stopped translating the books, and the fact that people are requesting more every time they do a survey shows that there's demand.

Attached: 06220314491.jpg (1269x1080, 592K)

Emperoider is okay, but actually it has little to do with the boogiepop series. or rather, I would call it the spin-off from Night Watch series and The Dance with Pluto and the Beast.
>Nice, how weird was she?
She is unusually active in matters related to Takeda.

Could you describe the plots of these books, I know Emperoider is the MPLS academy one but I'm curious about the events that take place

So what kind of things did Touka do? You can't just tease me like this user. Spoil me.

Attached: 1549036812237.png (329x329, 96K)

For old man

Sorry.
In my poor English, it's difficult to summarise the plot because it's cross-linked with kadono's various works and so complicated.
Although heard someone called it "super kadono wars", I too think it is precise expression.
One thing I can say for sure is that it requires much prior knowledge of many kadono's works besides the boogiepop series.

This, I am too curious now

how is the OP so good lads

I don’t know, but I never skipped it
Same with the ED, they somehow fit each other so well

It's cool, your english is good, user. Thanks for the answer, sounds like it's a crossover-type spin-off with lots of callbacks.
Because Myth and Roid, and it's the perfect op for a series like Boogiepop but the ED is better imo, max comfy.

you fucking nailed it.

the biggest drop off for me was the non existance atmosphere and character design, it looks like generic shit and boogiepop is far from it, but I guess they truly wanted the edgy kids as audience

Touka stalked takeda with her stalker.

Holy shit really? Why? Was he cheating or something

Elaborate. Also Touka had a stalker?

That scene was good

I remember that it was caused by a trivial trouble between lovers, but there was a synthetic woman who seduced Takeda.
To be precise, an swapped stalker(girl). Her original stalker(boy) is stalking another person(main villain).
This is kinda complicated setting too.

>a trivial trouble between lovers, but there was a synthetic woman who seduced Takeda.
This sounds potentially hilarious and massively entertaining, it would be made better if Takeda got seduced on orders from the Towa Org.

>It was then that I finally got a clear look at his face.
>Words can’t begin to do justice to the shock I felt at that moment.
>Perhaps the best example I can give is to describe it like one of these nopperabou ghost stories – you expect a faceless ghost, but instead, the ghost looks just like you. At first you just don’t get it, but then you do, and it totally freaks you out.
>I stared at him, eyes wide open and mouth agape.
>But for him, I seemed to be little more than another face in the crowd, and he soon shifted his glare to the man next to me.
Yep, the anime really captured Keiji's shock

Attached: nfflULw.png (1920x1080, 1002K)

>Boogiepop made a strange expression. Beneath the low brim of his hat, his left eye narrowed and the right side of his mouth twisted upwards. It was a very asymmetrical expression that Touka herself would never make.
>Later, I wondered if that expression was a strained sort of grin, but at the time, it baffled me. It was a sort of grin that seemed both sarcastic and somewhat diabolical at the same time.
>I never did see him smile, though.

>but there was a synthetic woman who seduced Takeda.
Holy shit I want to read it

Forgot pic. Smug girls are the craze right now, who cares about some shitty novel written 20 years ago? Nips did because the anime was a complete flop

Attached: MGXwkSW.png (1920x1080, 711K)

>but there was a synthetic woman who seduced Takeda.
Is takeda a chad?

Is that the volume where Towa Org tried to recruit Takeda?

If my memory is correct, the synthetic woman (who was one of clients of his job in public) personally evaluated his abilities, so she tried to recruit him for towa.
Of course, she failed and Takeda wasn't informed about the Towa Organization after all.
You user-kuns seem to be so curious about takeda, but his episode wasn't that important in Decadent Black, unfortunately.
The main protagonist was iincho.

>It was a sort of grin that seemed both sarcastic and somewhat diabolical at the same time
That is just describing smug.

agreed. The character designs and "sleek" look really fucked this up

Damn, this is some movie-tier OST
m.youtube.com/watch?v=hm0VSo6lEpI

Going from 2019 to Phantom, I noticed that Phantom was much better at ambiance, directing, and music, but that's basically it. The animation was really poor and worse than 2019, with the shot of Boogiepop Phantom walking up the stairs after autismo girl being horribly off model. Even so, both have their place and shouldn't be compared as doing the same thing because they're not.

In most cases you could learn nip faster than it takes for translations.

Unironically god tier, if you liked the anime then you’ll love them

Really directing and atmosphere are the only things Phantom has over Boogiepop And Others. Both soundtracks are superb but the character designs, animation, and the fact that 2019 is literally canon puts it above Phantom
They're good, very light reading, you can finish one book in an afternoon. I would wait for the user who read them to come back, or make a thread later for it.
