I preferred when all the Sharingan's main gimmick was to copy shit and only freaks like Itachi got the Mangekyo. It seemed a lot more balanced with the Byakugan back then. Kishimoto couldn't work with the concepts of separate things being good. He operated under the pretense of "I have to use Y to show why X is better!" So Neji had to go into the trash eventually, specifically to preserve Sasuke.

He also started going away from niche, roundabout powers to more absolute and simple things, so really the byakkugan just didn't compare anymore.
It's pretty great that the Sharingan is the "copy wheel eye." So they have an ability that makes it dangerous for the opponent to use most abilities in plain sight, and makes it so that they'll simply learn a lot more than mostly everyone else in shorter amounts of time, and have better reflexes.

And then that copy wheel eye becomes "All those simple abilities you bothered to ever look at? So beneath you, they're more of a burden on your mind at this point then a benefit." Everything the mangekyo has to be capable of has to be labeled "the best of x." It can even get it's own technical element, which is technically a bloodline all on its own. And anyone who calls themselves a genjutsu user without one can basically neck themselves. It really didn't have to turn into that, it was good where it started.

I just now re-read the land of waves due to a thread that was up recently, and sharingan was absolutely perfect in the beginning. It was incredibly dangerous for the opponent, arguably still OP in some ways, but not unbeatable. Kakashi says that no-one has ever lived to see his eye a second time, and it almost bites him in the ass when someone actually does.
Zabuza circumvents everything by hiding in the mist, rendering the copying and mind-fuckery completely useless. He had time to mull over what happened in their first fight and he sees through that it was mostly mind games that fucked him over. No one outside of Konoha precisely knows what the sharingan does, save that it "copies" so Kakashi plays with his opponents and tricks them into acting the way he wants because of the preternatural speed of responding to the enemy.
Then mangekyo happened, and consequently every other eye-hax powerup, and this went all down the toilet.

It's actually kind of surprising that Sasuke never ended up saying that he could see the chakra nodes, because his sharingan was just oh so special. He could already see chakra through solid ground, so you'd think he would have pulled that out of his ass at some point.

I like how the Sharingan had all these rules to finally be able to upgrade it to Rinnegan. You had to awaken Mangekyo in your eyes, then transplant a close relative's own awakened Mangwekyo, then obtain Senju chakra to upgrade it. Meanwhile the Byakugan just requires one upgrade to reach Tenseigan, which has equal strength to Six-Paths Mode and can use Truth-Seeking Spheres by default.

The biggest problem with Naruto is how fucking disjointed it is. The world makes some sense now, even with aliens and everything, because we have the knowledge now.
Problem is that in the beginning the series was like 70% secretive mercenary stuff and 30% magic stuff, and then it turns the other way around, finally upping the ante on magic, and suddenly ayy lmaos.
Kishi wanted to make that manga about magic, wizards and sorcery and arguably he ended up doing just what he wanted. He just ended up doing it with the series that got greenlit for WSJ by being about fantasy ninjas and not wizards. A lot of Naruto's problems would have been averted if Kishi was a better planner and writer, but he isn't, so he just made literally everything up as he went from land of waves onwards, instead of now established major plot points and revelations about the world surfacing organically.
