Lina's older sister, Luna, is a Knight of Ceifeed, meaning she's carrying a fragment of the power of God and one of, if not the, strongest mortal alive. In fact, when she was a kid, she killed a plasma dragon with a kitchen knife. She's just that good. It's because of this blessing and responsibility that their parents fawned over Luna, while Lina was largely ignored.
Lina, naturally, acted out as a form of jealousy. Luna is beautiful, intelligent, and, most-importantly, STACKED. Lina is moderately attractive, cunning, and, most-importantly, GREEDY. So, when Lina was a kid, she fabricated a movie projector all on her own, and used magical recording to "tape" Luna taking showers. She would then project the recordings on the sides of barns for boys in their village to see, provided they paid her a fee. When Luna found out about this, she beat Lina within an inch of her life.
There's numerous other "incidents" Lina instigated that she doesn't share, but we know that she was on the receiving end of fists, knives, and even poisons from her older sister for what she did. Their mother, before settling down, was a sorcerer, and part of the Sorcerers' Guild. As such, rather than continue to receive abuse and be ignored by her parents, Lina requested to go to the Guild at an extremely young age to learn magic. Her parents relented.
By the time she was thirteen years old, Lina had not only earned her certification, but also a traveling license to practice magic relatively freely on the continent. Lina is also thirteen when she was first intercepted by Naga the Serpent, and this is where Slayers Special starts.
By the time Lina is fourteen, she's had more experience than most sorcerers do in their lifetime thanks to her knack for causing herself trouble, and by the time Lina turns 18 she'll have assisted in killing Chaos Dragon Garv, Hellmaster Fibrizo, terminated two fragments of Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu, and summoned the Lord of Nightmares.

Absolutely. Whether it's the light novels, the manga, or the anime, Gourry is routinely shown to have a low-Intelligence, high-Wisdom setup when it comes to his brain power. According to the Word of God, Gourry is one step shy from being in the Dragon Slave casting block in terms of raw magical power... but he can't use magic because he can't remember Chaos and Power Words.
One thing that most people notice is that his perception is absolutely phenomenal. Besides his physical acumen, such as being able to see in near-dark environments and being the strongest swordsman on the continent, he's also able to perceive things characters like Lina miss. For example, he knew immediately that Xellos was a mazoku when he first met him. However, that lack of intelligence appears when he didn't say anything about it because he figured everyone else knew he was a mazoku, too.
Gourry is shown to be a lost puppy sometimes, but he's far from directionless. Before meeting Lina he'd helped Sairaag, as we know in both the books and anime (remember Sylphiel?), and we know from Slayers Special that he'd even served in a war at some point after stealing the Sword of Light from his family and before meeting Lina. The reason he stole the Sword in the first place was because he'd rather have his family hate him, then continue to fight each other for the right of succession.
Gourry is consistently shown to be a caring, helpful individual... It's just his poor attention span, bad memory, and lack of understanding that gives him a bad rep.

Yes, most of everyone's backstories are covered in the light novels. This isn't a bad thing, of course; the stories have more room to develop characters' backstories than the anime does. However, if you limit yourself to just the anime, you're missing a massive portion of what makes everyone so enjoyable.

In the light novels, both Lina and Gourry find themselves at a crossroads following the Hellmaster Arc. Lina's excuse for letting Gourry travel with her was that she would find a way to force him to sell the Sword of Light to her at some point in the future. Gourry's excuse was that he was operating as Lina's guardian, and needed to keep her safe.
After Hellmaster returned the Sword of Light, Gorun Nova, back to the "Black World", they were in a bind. Lina could no longer let Gourry travel with her under the auspices of trying to buy it from him, and Gourry couldn't act as a guardian without a weapon that could harm high-ranking mazoku. In other words, this is where they should have split up. But, Lina had an idea.
Lina's argument was that it was her fault that Gourry was captured and lost his Sword, because Gourry was her traveling companion and Hellmaster used him as bait to lure her back to Sairaag. Therefore, she was responsible for having to get Gourry a new magical sword of equal value and strength to the lost Sword of Light. Naturally, Gourry liked that argument, allowing the two to continue to travel together after Volume 8.
In the next arc, Lina and Gourry went across the continent trying to find a suitable weapon, from buying cheap magical items to finding cursed weapons that were being used by the retainers of Dynast Grausherra to build up a new mazoku invasion. They also end up fighting against a new form of enemy, human / mazoku hybrids, and during one of these confrontations they discover a magical weapon in a castle armory that seems suitable enough for replacing the Sword of Light.
They find out later that the weapon has a metal "shell" on the blade. Once that's broken, it reveals the true weapon underneath: The Blast Sword, the weapon supposedly used by Flare Dragon Ceifeed, the God of their world, to carve up Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu into seven pieces 3000 years ago.

If it makes you feel better, at the end of Volume 15, Lina is left directionless herself. She completed her promise and got Gourry a replacement sword, and doesn't know what to do next. So, she forces Gourry to decide where they should go and what they should do, since she's been leading them everywhere for the past three years.
Gourry asks for her to take him to her home town, with her believing it's so he can ask her parents for permission to marry her.

None of Lina's party can fight Xellos. Even together, they can't beat Xellos. I know what you're thinking: "But she's beaten Shabranigdu!" In both cases, Lina won thanks to extreme circumstances, and even then it's against just 1/7th of the real Shabranigdu. Garv was executed by Fibrizo, and Hellmaster was bested by a one-in-a-million save by the Lord of Nightmares.
The only person Lina knows who could potentially go toe-to-toe on equal footing with Xellos is her older sister, Luna. Since Lina can't defeat Xellos at all, she's forced to put up with his shenanigans.

Well... Yeah. That's kinda his thing. The reason he's not a dead retainer is because of how strong he is. Hellmaster lost all of his retainers 1,000 years ago because he split their power way too much. Garv's lost his retainers to Lina, same with Dolphin in one continuity. Dynast lost two of his four retainers to Lina in the light novels. All that's left is two of Dynast's retainers, and Xellos.

In terms of mazoku power scales, it generally goes:
Ruby-Eye Shabranigdu -> Subordinates (Garv, Dynast, Dolphin, Greater Beast, Fibrizo) -> Retainers -> low-ranking mazoku -> monsters.
However, even within these scales, there's degrees of separation when it comes to the retainers. Generally speaking, the subordinates created at least one general and one priest. For example, Garv had Rashart and Ralktak as his general and priest, and Dolphin had Riksfalto and Huraker. Fibrizo, alternatively, thought it would be more prudent to have multiple agents active at once, and created eight retainers. Dynast had a sort of "middle-ground", and created four. Greater Beast Zelas Metallium had a different approach.
Beast's idea was to combine the duties of general and priest into one entity, rather than divide that power. Xellos, then was simultaneously her priest and general, and it truly showed. In the Great Koma War 1,000 years ago, every single one of Fibrizo's retainers died to the dragons. On the other hand, Xellos slaughter over 1,000 dragons on his own.
It's because his power is undivided as a retainer that Xellos is superior to the other retainers, and why he'll probably be the last one to live. He's a power scale below the subordinates, but the "skip" he would need to get to their level is much lower than Lina's "skip" to get to him.

While I'm not disagreeing in terms of liking Sylphiel over Filia, Sylphiel doesn't necessarily have a skill set that warrants her being a full-fledged member of the group. Yes, she can heal, but so can Amelia. Yes, she can cast a Dragon Slave, but she's not nearly as reckless as Lina is when it comes to firing it.
The problem with Sylphiel is that everything about her was resolved within the first eight volumes of the light novels, and that means her entire story is done by the end of NEXT as well. Add in that Lina and Gourry ended up getting shipped, and Sylphiel just has no purpose.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, when the filler episodes are better than the plot episodes, you know something is wrong.
I'll summarize the majority of complaints that I've heard:

My personal complaint is that TRY opened up the entire world of Slayers for exploration, and the writers thought it prudent to stick to the continent again. The manga has shown us the
West, and TRY gave us the East. Since the light novels were never expected to continue, the anime should've tried moving down to the South, where the Earthlord resides, or had Lei Magnus-Shabranigdu awaken in the far-north if they had to keep it on the continent.

Lina can't choose whether or not to summon L-sama, L-sama chooses that of Her own volition. Since Lina can't "force" the invocation like what happened in Hellmaster's temple, that's not considered part of her skill set. In fact, after Volume 15, Lina's moved back down to about the same power level as Naga again since she can't cast Ragna Blade without a stationary magic circle for amplification purposes.
That's not necessarily a bad thing. After all, if Naga learns Dragon Slave, she'll technically be stronger than Lina since the former has a higher magic capacity.

LORE, you should go with the light novels. Start with the original fifteen, and you can also go through the spin-offs Slayers Special / Smash. By the time you finish, then Volume 16 will be closer to getting translated.
ACTION, the anime, movies, and OVAs. Start with Slayers Excellent, then Special, then the movies except Premium, and then the series proper. Once you finish NEXT, then you can watch Premium, and continue on through TRY to Evolution-R.
ECCHI, the manga is your best bet. Medieval Mayhem -> Knight of the Aqualord -> Light-Magic -> Hourglass of Falces, here. There are also manga adaptations of the light novels, anime, and movies if you want a different perspective on the stories. The manga "continuity" is also tied in with the video games, but good luck getting a hand on those.

They're going back to Lina's hometown specifically to meet Lina's parents. In Series 3 we're going to end up meeting Dad again, and we'll also get introduced to her mom and Luna, more than likely. It's why everyone's excited for Volume 17.
Personally I want to see Lina flip the fuck out when Dad says he knows Gourry, and Gourry legitimately doesn't remember, but she thinks their companionship was something planned by her family and she's been "duped" into traveling with the guy.

I didn't enjoy Slayers. Have finished the first season at the second attempt after dropping it about 5 years ago. I didn't find it funny. The pure comedy episodes were watchable, but it became so bad when the plot kicked in, I literally had to force myself to sit through the show. Though I loved Lina as a character. I guess you need to watch Slayers as a kid to really appreciate them.
