Fucking lol.
if she put that spiky weight on a strong enough pole she could hit things harder with it
Its even more ridiculous than you think
But I still love my amazon queen
Actually, the whip effect produces a faster speed at the spiked ball than a pole would, so it's a more dangerous weapon. That said, in order to use it she would need to be very heavy, or use an anchor.
it might produce a faster speed but on a chain it is also stopped more easily because of the laws of physics, whatever they're called, making the actual impact less impactful. and all you really care about when using such an item as a weapon is causing the most damage per effort you put in.
try chopping a tree down with an axehead on a chain. even if you were super accurate and hitting it at the perfect angle on every swing you would not get the desired result even after maybe a thousand swings.
would take far less effort with a proper axe with a handle, and there's a good reason for that
>would take far less effort with a proper axe with a handle
Yeah but it wouldn't look nowhere near as cool as an axe on a chain
>it is also stopped more easily
No. By grabbing the chain, you are not stopping the ball. You are just changing its trajectory and making it go faster.
At the same time I don't want to see elves fighting tree spirits and dragons with the same weapons humans historically used to fight humans.
i think you are misunderstanding friend. i mean when you actually hit a solid object with the ball going at maximum speed, it is stopped more easily than if it were on a pole being held by the swinger.
>historically used to fight humans
that isn't the point, friend. i didn't tell her to reduce the weight of the ball to something human-sized like a 2 or 3 pound weight. i just said it would do far more damage if she attached a magically strong pole to it (normal steel or any other modern metals in our real world would bend or crack under the weight of any impact you make with that huge ball and you would lose a lot of energy)
this would be true no matter where you go, as almost all of our fiction including weapons follows the laws of the universe in terms of physics, even loosely. sure you can't cut a solid slab of metal with a razor sharp katana, but that is only the case because we don't have a metal strong enough in the real world to maintain its edge when hitting such a dense object. if we did, in fantasy, you technically could!
>in fantasy, you technically could!
No, because you would first have to deform the metal before being able to cut it. I don't know if you've noticed, but katana are actually quite thick. The edge is ideally a 1 dimensional line. It has no width. But let's be generous, let's give the cut a 1mm width.
Now try to stick a 5mm wide blade into a slit of 1 mm width.
You get stuck.
You can do it with very thin sheets of metal that are easily deformed or where you reach the other side before the blade's thickness really matters. Or with metals that are soft enough to just bend to your every whim.
>i mean when you actually hit a solid object with the ball going at maximum speed, it is stopped more easily than if it were on a pole being held by the swinger.
I see now. You wish to give the weapon an additional push after the first contact. Yeah, in the context of anime that does make sense. I concede the point.
i don't think you read my post properly, my dear friend!
you definitely could (barring strength requirements to split apart the dense molecules of the object being cut) with an aggressively razor sharp (the edge being picometers thick) katana that could actually hold its edge (magically)
the reason you gave that the blade gets stuck is because the moment you inserted it into that slit, the edge already began dulling on a molecular level. it wouldn't push through and continue cutting.
if, in a fantasy setting, you had a blade that could never dull (common trope) and you sharpened it to the point of being magnitudes less than 1 yoctometer in thickness, you can cut whatever you want. you can cut spacetime.
>i don't think you read my post properly, my dear friend!
No, you didn't read mine.
I was assuming that the edge is super-awesome and cuts the metal with no trouble and even removed more metal than it comes into contact with.
That is not the problem. Please read my previous post.
How about someone that actually makes it look cool
Did she shave her chest hair?
>But let's be generous, let's give the cut a 1mm width.
thats really thick, friend! that is really really thick. you want the edge to be WAY WAY WAY less than that. you know those animes where they haven't even noticed they've been cut yet and still actually move and function for a while before falling into pieces? that's the level of sharpness this blade has to be.
now i get what you're saying, what about the rest of the blade? well, technically you wouldn't need "the rest" of the blade if you had such a material (the sword would be practically invisible, just a string of subatomic particles forming a solid line), but for the sake of aesthetics say you had a full sword with all the looks. something kids can easily identify as a sword. from the tip of the edge, it would gradually widen and widen until it reaches the visible meters. honestly, such a blade would be pretty odd, as you could cut yourself before you even "touch" the blade (the rest of the blade being invisible to the naked eye past a certain point). it would still work out.
you CANNOT get a regular katana and slap "an edge" on it. it would need to be a gradual sharpening.
>thats really thick, friend!
Yes, the CUT. Not the edge.
>ven removed more metal than it comes into contact with.
I was increasing the efficiency of the blade, not decreasing it.
>technically you wouldn't need "the rest" of the blade
Now at this point you are no longer talking about a sword, you just have a magical device. No point in referring to it as a sword.
If it's a katana, it's going to have thickness at the back of of the blade. And that same back of the blade needs to pass through whatever you are cutting.
i already understood your point, but you are glossing over the fact that the blade facing the cutting area can literally be as wide as it wants to be, as long as the edge is sharpened fine enough
i forgot to mention, the picture is a katana blade when looking at it from the top, rather than the side
>the blade facing the cutting area can literally be as wide as it wants to be, as long as the edge is sharpened fine enough
How are you cooking up this stupid idea?
Explain yourself. You are making an assertion without an explanation. At this point you might just as well just call it MAGIC or refer to the fact that you've only been posting bakas as reaction images.
user...
let me speak your language.
>blade is as thin as a safety razor but edge is extremely small
>takes moderate strength to wield as you would still need to wedge apart the metal or whatever, provided that the sides of the sword don't get caught by friction that is stronger than you can handle
>blade is hyper thick but is sharpened to an impossibly sharp point
>requires immense strength to wield (while also leaving gaping holes in whatever you cut) as you are fighting friction to push aside what the edge had cut
>blade is as thin as it can be visible to the naked eye
>requires the least strength to wield as it is able to pass through objects with the least amount of friction being applied to the sides
get it now?
NAMU
Scythes are both retarded and cool
>fighting friction to push aside what the edge had cut
That's not what friction means.
You are bending the material, you are not just scraping along it.
>>blade is as thin as it can be visible to the naked eye
>>blade is as thin as a safety razor but edge is extremely small
This is where friction might be your main concern.
But how do any of these three have anything to do with your claim that
>the blade facing the cutting area can literally be as wide as it wants to be
At this point I am assuming you are really just saying random shit in the name of Aqua. I will now stop replying because it's pointless trying to make sense of something that is intentionally left senseless.
scythes were actually employed in battle usage, its too bad they use the agriculture scythe and not the modified historical battle scythe with the upright blade
then again, the rule of cool is the name of the game
>they use the agriculture scythe
They don't. The agricultural tool has a blade that is directed forward rather than upward (when holding the scythe towards the ground.
The handle of a real scythe is also of a different shape than the straight pole you see in fiction.
>scythes were actually employed in battle usage,
"scythes"
>you are bending the material
have you ever CUT anything in your life? i mean even something like a loaf of bread or a piece of meat or a hard boiled egg that had been peeled? if you look at how cutting an object works, its all the same. for every material that exists. the only difference is density and molecular bonds.
I'm pretty sure you are misinterpreting that user.
Here I'll help explain them.
>scythes were actually employed in battle usage
There was a weapon in history of which was based upon the scythe.
>its too bad they use the agriculture scythe and not the modified historical battle scythe with the upright blade
It's unfortunate that in anime they consistently use the agricultural scythe, rather than the historical war scythe where the blade altered to be a proper weapon rather than a farm tool.
>It's unfortunate that in anime they consistently use the agricultural scythe,
I just explained that they don't.
They use the meme scythe, that was designed by somebody who had never seen an actual scythe in his life and was probably going off an image of the Grim Reaper he'd seen somewhere.
It's closer to the agricultural scythe than the war scythe, but in the end, both the war scythe and the fictional war scythe are functionally completely different from the agricultural scythe.
Im a little confused here. Do either of you have a picture of this "war scythe" you are describing? Aside from ones wielded by reapers and the one in soul eater, the ones I see in anime typically look like an agricultural scythe.
the straight barred fictional war scythe is just an ineffective prototype agri scythe. the orientation of the blade is the determining factor of identifying a scythe for farm use or killing people.
its acceptable to call the fictional battle scythe an agricultural scythe
took me 20 eons in google to find this information, you better appreciate my effort
Gyoumei is best boy.
I do appreciate the effort. The only reason I asked is because I wanted to know what you were envisioning specifically instead of just assuming.
>ineffective
*Not functional.
You cannot use the fictional war scythe as an agricultural scythe because the blade is not oriented in the direction of the grass. At best, you could use it as an oversized sickle. So if you wanted, you could call it a war sickle.
calling something ineffective is basically calling it non functional.
if wearing cement blocks around your upper arms as floatation devices is ineffective, its the same as saying it "doesn't work".
Sorry, I read that as inefficient.
But yeah, if blade orientation serves to define the type of scythe, then I think it stands to reason that the fantasy scythe is its own type, and not to be confused with the agricultural one.
It most certainly has the blade of a sickle. Considering it can't function as a scythe or sickle its kind of odd to call it a war version of either though.
This seems about right.
At first I agreed with you, but I think the other user's point makes more sense. You're talking about cutting soft things, ie things that you could pull apart with your fingers. Metal is a tough thing, but even with something like aluminium foil, it's thin enough to cut. But if it's something both tough and thick, even if your blade is extremely sharp, you still have to force all the parts through that aren't.
Got a little too excited drawing. To clarify my point: it's certainly a lot easier with a hypernanoedge, but you still have to have enough strength to deform the metal that surrounds it, because if the hyperedge was both long, hard, and thin enough to part something that tough through, it'd be impossible to sheath and snap on everything and then lacerate anything in the area as the "shards" (microscopic death flakes) flutter to the ground. Or if it was so hard it wouldn't snap, it would be like a giant paddle.
Sea urchins arent that bad
wanna backtrack with me anonymouse? lets go back to my post here: >barring strength requirements to split apart the dense molecules of the object being cut
your blade might be sharp enough to actually go between the molecules and push them to the sides, parting in the wake of your blade, but no matter how sharp a blade is, there always needs to be some force you need to apply. when cutting a tank barreling towards you in half, you need to have the strength (or mass) in order to hold your blade in front of your body. the sharper your blade and the thinner the "rest of it" is, the less actual strength you need as the material parts more easily, but in the case of a sharp katana, you would need significant strength to be able to just hold your ground.
then again, one thing most anime miss in the realm of sharp swords is, if the blade is so thin and sharp and someone cuts right through it, like a bullet for instance, the bullet would split in two cleanly and now you have two bullets headed for you maintaining their velocity pre-cut (an extremely sharp blade would allow this), one for each eye.
Oh, I'd forgotten you already said that. I don't know what the other user was getting hung up on then, probably just misread/speedread like I did. In that case, nice breakdown.
It's kind of dumb but I really like the idea of using a shovel as a weapon.
not if made out of nano-carbon
Actually, I think I get the hangup. You said it like sort of an afterthought, but the strength required for any crazy use like splitting a train or even just a solid hunk of stationary metal seems like it would be more improbable than an incomprehensibly sharp blade. If someone was strong enough to do that, it would probably be more convenient to just tear it apart with their bare hands.
Big ass axes really do it for me, also.

She can chuck it through a mountain, I don't think there's an issue.
What nostalgia. I remember reading when that cover came out, I love the class assignments and I really got a kick out of Sasuke being an elf for some reason.
>it's kind of dumb
He doesn't know about ww1
shovels are an amazing tool. as long as they're not exclusively used as weapons (which is stupid as it wastes most of the design innovations of the shovel), it's fine. if there was a shovel-fu i'd be all for that
thats an argument frequently brought up by many fantasy consumers. If x was strong enough to do "something impossible for a normal human", why would x need a weapon?
you need to remember that humans aren't actually that helpless and they can kill with their bare hands, but know what makes killing easier? weapons. weapons shouldn't be seen as a "crutch" but rather as a force multiplier. if human cannot pierce bone with his finger, but could pierce it with a thin sharp stone, he found a way to do something much stronger than his plain body is capable of.
of course, when it comes into the realm of super powers such as super strength, the weapons needed also need to be on par and match what you're capable of. giving an ordinary steel sword to the hulk would be pretty pointless as he can deform it to the point of uselessness by simply breathing on it. but give the hulk a magical powerful sword and he can do much more damage than with just his fists.
if you are throwing the weapon, then adding a handle isn't really going to make a difference in terms of how hard you can hit with it. she can probably hit a trillion newtons of force by spinning and tossing it like a stone in a sling, but if she wanted to smack something worth a sextillion newtons of force close up she could try the handle.
I agree. I guess my point was based on the idea that the argument was about "can a superkatana be much more visually impressive than the best physically possible katana in the hands of the the best physically/mentally possible swordsman?" since of course you can explain anything away with anime logic. It really depends on what specific thing you/the character wants to accomplish.
>as a force multiplier.
But what are you multiplying really? If the majority of the work you are doing to your target is deformation (rather than cutting), a sword (even if it's super sharp and unbreakable) is a bad choice for a weapon. Just pick a giant club and you'll accomplish more. Or better yet, take a spear and just put a small hole through whatever you were trying to cut apart before.
Swords are not designed to transfer a large deal of kinetic energy. Therefore, you are not getting a whole lot of multiplication out of it.
>Shovels are fantastic for rookie education-we can bury their waste products, shut them up, and, if necessary, bury them as well. They're useful no matter where you are-trench, base, or graveyard.
>A shovel is a good friend to any and every type of solider. And a shovel is the best gear for a close-quarters fight in a trench. Longer than a bayonet, simpler to handle than a rifle, sturdier than any other tool. Not only that, but they are extremely cheap to make, so they're perfect for mass-producing.
>This is it, the ideal piece of equipment. This is the point humanity was meant to reach. Civilization has developed the shovel as its implement.

Legato on trigun maximum uses a gigantic flail. And the spikes of the flail also have guns. So he is just swinging around a flail that shoots bullets everywhere.
I dont think anything compares with this.
Youjo Senki/Tanya the Evil. It's the one LN that was fascinating enough to keep me reading. And the anime adaption was pretty good as a hook to get me in.
It's isekai, but the protag gets dropped into World War 1 with some limited use of magic instead of a full fantasy world.
The source of his ultimate power in this world is mostly just his knowledge of modern military tactics, psychology and war knowledge which while common sense to a modern war buff makes him look like a genius tactician.
The author said he took inspiration from grand strategy games where you can mess with alternate histories.

German soldiers used to use shovels in hand to hand combat in Stalingrad all the time, it's not dumb, it's actually very effective
It's a lump of metal on a pole which you can use to bash people on the head, it's all you need.
It's good for digging your own grave.
AAACHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
German soldiers also had to deal with German bureaucracy (and German logistics) for their supplies. They would have used frozen herrings to fight the Russians with, if they hadn't been hungry enough to eat them still frozen.
do i really have to explain it? use your own brain for once.
>if the majority of the work you are doing to your target is deformation
who made said this, ever?
>Swords are not designed to transfer a large deal of kinetic energy. Therefore, you are not getting a whole lot of multiplication out of it.
in the real world, swords are sharp enough to cut some things but not all things. sharpen it more and the edge becomes too delicate and will dull easily, rendering the whole point moot. in fantasy, a sharp sword that is insanely fucking sharp but also insanely fucking hard and can keep its edge can cut through ALL (except other magnificent materials like itself) things.
The proper use (read: the only real use) for flails and similar chain-weight weapons is to bypass shields. Swing at an enemy, chain catches top/side of shield, shield becomes pivot point, weighted ball/spike gains velocity as it is able to bend around and goes for the head, etc.
Fantasy then misshapes them into enormous rocks attached to flimsy ropes because bigger looks like it'll hurt more.
Against armoured but unshielded opponents, a pole-hammer or -axe and similar concentrated-mass weapons at the end of a stick are far superior, and you're completely right about that. The real benefit of a chain weapon is being able to bypass the physical limitation of not being able to strike past a shield, owing to poles being straight.
>cut a solid slab of metal with a razor sharp katana
Depending on the size and shape of each, friction can become the limiting factor, as the side of the blade runs against whatever object it's cutting. If the blade is composed purely of the edge and has no "spine" then you could do whatever you want with it, yes, but that's a defining trait of a katana. But beyond that, how would you sheath such a sword?
>how would you sheath such a sword
why are you so caught up on this? just let it hang out with its cock out. what are you, a novice that would hurt his own body with his own sword?
But you won't get batoujutsu bonus if you don't keep it in a sheath.
>how would you sheath a sword with a yottameter edge?
put it in a sheath with the inner surfaces the blade edge may contact lined with a material so dense that not even the blade would be able to cut through it easily.
warning: sheath may be heavier than the sun.
I fucking love shul shagana.
