All any character needs to do is aid the show, be entertaining when they are meant to be, a catalyst for excitment.

Mikasa is a better character then most in entertainment period, she has very clear desires, and is characterized as brute, she's used effectly countless times off of these simply premises to create some of the series most exciting moments.
She's an excellent character it has absolutely nothing with being "deep" or self serving etc
