Thank you! Yeah thats the plan, but I've read warnings that /ic/ will utterly crush you for being new. I do already have the sticky open though. I'm just generally asking if I should keep on copying or already move on to learning the basic anatomy stuff like loomis instead.

I'm trying to copy something more complex right now and I can already tell there's a limit to how well you can copy stuff without an actual understanding of anatomy. Like I can immediately tell the eyes and mouth are positioned all wrong but short of measuring distances and all I don't really have any means of doing better, like I'm missing the tools for it.

I'll keep the off-topic to a minimum now, just wanted some pointers.

As long as you feel that copying helps you, copy. Once you think that giving yourself a bit more freedom might yield better results, copy less and try to start with actual construction.
But don't ever be afraid to use references. You have to, if you want your drawings to look good.

Loomis is jsut one option of many when it comes to anatomy, construction and composition. His method might suit you, or it might not. Don't force yourself to use it, just because people tell you to do so, if you find that it's not your thing.

Yes, that's true. /ic/ are not good at building up your confidence, and their critique will not be constructive. And it definitely won't be detailled enough to help you, individually, improve. They won't tell you where you went wrong and what to do better.
They do have some nice links to tutorials and references though.

As for what you can do better: Don't try to sketch the whole thing with thick, final lines at once. You are, right now, copying individual lines - but if you instead analyze the picture you are copying, you will notice that it itself is constructed in a specific way. Try to grasp HOW it is constructed, and then immitate that.
Don't be afraid to exeriment: Draw simple shapes with a thin pencil and low pressure, sketch around, and erase frequently. Once you have something that looks approximately right, that's when you can draw your thick final lines.
Remember that you are, right now, not drawing for results, but to understand the drawing process better.

Also, Ahiru is cute. Keep on practicing. Do it for her.

Learning anatomy and learning construction are not necessarily the same thing. But both are connected. Again: Don't force yourself to do anything. Try to have fun!

Distances are actually something that differs from face to face. Your problem right now is mainly that you don't think about your subject as three-dimensional. You drew the eyes without pondering that they're two balls (roughly speaking) in the eyesockets of a skull, which underlies the whole structure.
You don't think much about how the skull, the lower jaw and the neck all connect. Or how a nose and ears are constructed.
There's also a lack of symmetry right now: Those two eyes have a completely different shape!

Well, the eyes in your reference pic aren't highly symmetrical, and they don't have to be, but they are similar enough. In your pic, they have different rise and slope. The right eye (the one on the left, from the viewer's perspective) looks like a stereotypical Asian eye, narrow, raised outer side, inner side low and obstructed by the brow ridge. The left eye looks like a large stereotypically Caucasian eye, very round and straight.
All of that is more of an analysis thing than a practice thing though, and might not be the way you approach drawing. So don't worry too much about it. Just remember to look over your work every now and then and compare it to reality (or to other people's drawings), just so you begin noticing those little details.

Well, like I've said before: Try going from copying lines to copying structures you recognize.
Maybe try using photos as references, not other drawings. Because photos won't give you lines to copy, and you'll have to come up with a way to translate them into linework yourself.

Yeah you're right, and don't get me wrong I'm not blaming the source material, its just that any slight asymmetry is amped up to 11 in my attempt to copy it. Wouldn't try copying that guys art if I didn't admire it.

I personally recommend starting by fundies without copying. It's good to go into it with a fresh mind rather than default to someone else's techniques when problem solving in art.
