when asuka first showed up i thought "this is the overachieving, authoritative girl character with a chip on her shoulder, i think i've seen all that this character has to offer", and sure enough by the end of the series there was little nuance added to her. this shit was hyped up to me for probably a decade as the greatest thing since sliced bread. what a disappointment. haven't watched EoE yet, so maybe they reel it back in, but i doubt that

the original Berserk (1997) is a good series, full of action and existential dread with a sound track that really makes it great, the animations are somewhat dated but it's a great story and the music is my favorite that I've seen
if you want production value simply try some anime movies, Spirited Away or some other studio Ghibli works are very good (princess mononoke, ninja scroll, akira, ghost in the shell, perfect blue)
samurai champloo is also worth a watch, it's the only series I know that I've never heard of someone not liking after watching it, which is tough to do because there are pretentious faggots everywhere that just pretend to hate shit that they actually like just to be contrarians

Then again, Evangelion's fanbase is among the most retarded fanbases in existence, and I'm not surprised they've told you that Evangelion is where anime begin and ends. The only people who can enjoy this out of nowhere are people in their late teens who are easily mind-blown with new age imagery, and nowadays that's difficult to find; it was very common in the late 90s/early 00s though.
As for the question if this is as good as anime gets, yes and no. It's one of the most important entries in the 90s, but it's far from being all there is to offer. There are many genres in anime, and even in the same genre there's huge differences across decades and authors.
Nevertheless, if your approach to watching anime is being an entitled cunt who bitches because it didn't blew your mind there's nothing else to recommend, fuck off and no one will miss you. If you are genuinely trying to enjoy something new, though, first of all you'd need to say what kind of stuff you like.
